El relato histórico negrolegendario en la batalla cultural

Abstract

Es, en la dimensión cultural del poder, donde los españoles americanos y los españoles europeos, en Hispanoamérica y en España, han perdido la más importante de todas las batallas culturales: la batalla por el relato histórico. Han sido las potencias que tradicionalmente se enfrentaron con España e Hispanoamérica las que han escrito –e impuesto el relato– la historia de la conquista española de América y la historia de la relación entre España e Hispanoamérica durante el mal llamado período colonial. La leyenda negra, la falsa historia de la conquista española de América, ha sido la más importante herramienta utilizada por Holanda, Gran Bretaña, Francia y Los Estados Unidos en la guerra cultural que llevaron a cabo contra España. Esa guerra cultural fue, aunque por motivos distintos continuada, paradójicamente, luego por la Unión Soviética, Cuba y Venezuela.

It is in the cultural dimension of power that the Spanish Americans and the Spanish Europeans, in Spanish America and in Spain, have lost the most important of all cultural battles: the battle for the historical narrative. It has been the powers that traditionally confronted Spain and Spanish America that have written —and imposed the narrative— the history of the Spanish conquest of America and the history of the relationship between Spain and Spanish America during the ill-named colonial period. The black legend, the false history of the Spanish conquest of America, has been the most important tool used by Holland, Great Britain, France and the United States in the cultural war they waged against Spain. That cultural war was, although for different reasons, continued, paradoxically, later by the Soviet Union, Cuba and Venezuela.
