It is well known that matheatics, which allows us to understand the world around us, has been, and continues to be, a source of inspiration for architecture. Since ancient times, geometric shapes have acquired different meanings throughout history in construction and architectural design. This PFG aims to highlight the importance of geometry in architecture and the need to have good mathematical knowledge to make a good construction. This monographic documentary work focuses on the revision, from the constructive, mathematicalgeometric point of view, of the New Cathedral of Cádiz, whose construction began in 1722 under the design of the architect Vicente Acero. This analysis requires knowing the structure and the classification of the mathematical notion of curve and surface in order to understand the building. We will begin by describing the historical context and background of the city of Cádiz, as well as its old quarter, chronology, and construction description of the Cathedral. We will focus on Vicente Acero's project, reviewing his biography and architecture. One of his great contributions to Baroque architecture has been the resolution of the traffic between the roundabout and the transept. His mastery of stonework, with special mention of the hollow dome of the crypt of the Cathedral. Later we will make a geometric study of the surfaces focusing on the domes. And we will end up giving a vision of the Cathedral according to its symmetry. |
