Influencia de la toxina botulínica en el tratamiento de la sonrisa gingival

Abstract

Objetivo: examinar y analizar la efectividad y eficacia de la toxina botulínica tipo A en el tratamiento de la sonrisa gingival, valorando los beneficios estéticos y funcionales que puede aportar en este tipo de paciente, así como su viabilidad clínica. Material y método: utilizando la base de datos Pubmed, se realizó una búsqueda exhaustiva utilizando palabras claves y aplicando criterios de inclusión y exclusión que condujeron a la selección de trece artículos. Resultados: los artículos incluidos son tres ensayos clínicos controlados, dos revisiones sistemáticas, cuatro artículos de revisión bibliográfica y tres reportes de casos en los que se comparan y evalúan los efectos de la inyección de toxina botulínica tipo A en pacientes con sonrisa gingival, destacando la relevancia de la estética en este tipo de pacientes. Conclusiones: El tratamiento de la sonrisa gingival mediante la inyección de toxina botulínica puede aportar beneficios significativos, siendo una alternativa segura, estable y mínimamente invasiva. Destacar la necesidad de estudios bien diseñados, así como protocolos clínicos de actuación para definir de forma correcta y competente la secuencia y la dosis necesaria, obteniendo resultados a largo plazo.

Objective: to examine and analyze the effectiveness and efficacy of botulinum toxin type A in the treatment of the gummy smile, assessing the aesthetic and functional benefits that it can provide in this type of patient, as well as its clinical viability. Material and method: using the Pubmed database, a thorough search was performed using keywords and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria that led to the selection of thirteen items. Results: The articles included are three controlled clinical trials, two systematic reviews, four bibliographic review articles and three case reports in which the effects of botulinum toxin type A injection in patients with a gummy smile are compared and evaluated, highlighting the relevance of aesthetics in this type of patient. Conclusions: The treatment of the gummy smile through the injection of botulinum toxin can provide significant benefits, being a safe, stable and minimally invasive alternative. Highlight the need for well-designed studies, as well as clinical protocols for action to correctly and competently define the sequence and the necessary dose, obtaining long-term results.
