El cine biográfico español (1900-1939): causas de su producción y labor de la prensa cinematográfica

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza revistas cinematográficas españolas y declaraciones de intelectuales entre 1900 y 1939, centrando el análisis en lo referente al cine biográfico. Este interés por el cine biográfico viene refrendado por su vinculación al contexto político-cultural, marcado por el regeneracionismo, la búsqueda de la identidad nacional y la paulatina asunción del cine como un instrumento pedagógico. De esta manera, las fuentes consultadas permiten entrever una creciente demanda de este tipo de películas, de las cuales se filmaron menos de veinte desde la aparición del cinematógrafo hasta el franquismo. Por otra parte, analizando las películas estrenadas, obtenemos también las claves de la manera de idear un filme biográfico en aquel entonces, así como comprender los porqués de la insatisfacción generalizada de la crítica especializada. La ineludible comparación con las cinematografías extranjeras y la presión por presentar honrosamente la Historia de España lastró el cine biográfico de aquel entonces.

This article analyses Spanish film magazines and statements by intellectuals between 1900 and 1939, focusing the analysis on biographical cinema. This interest in biographical cinema is endorsed by its link to the political-cultural context, marked by regenerationism, the search for national identity and the gradual assumption of cinema as a pedagogical tool. Thus, the sources consulted reveal a growing demand for this type of film, of which less than twenty were made between the appearance of the cinematograph and Franco’s regime. On the other hand, by analysing the films that were released, we also obtain the keys to the way in which a biographical film was conceived at that time, as well as understanding the reasons for the generalised dissatisfaction of the specialised critics. The unavoidable comparison with foreign cinematographies and the pressure to present the history of Spain in an honourable way weighed down the biographical cinema of the time.
