dc.description.abstract | In 1966, Russian mathematician Vladimir Gurariy proved that the set of continuous
functions on the interval [0, 1] that are nowhere differentiable contains, except for the
zero function, an infinite-dimensional vector space (that is, it is lineable, a term coined
by Gurariy himself). This is a surprising result to say the least, since it evinces that,
however difficult it is to find any such function, not only there are many of them, but
they also constitute large algebraic structures.
The study of lineability and algebrability (the analogous property for algebras ins tead of vector spaces) has gained in popularity over the 21st century; the book [1] is a
sizeable compilation of results in the field. Based on two recent articles [2, 4], this work
addresses the lineability and algebrability of anti-L’Hôpital and anti-Weierstrass M
spaces, which are respectively formed by functions and sequences of functions which
verify the conclusions of L’Hôpital’s Rule and Weierstrass M Criterion despite failing
to meet their hypotheses.
In Chapter 1 we include some notions and results that are required in the following
chapters, so as to make the text as self-contained as possible. Specifically, we briefly
review real analytic functions, we lay out the basic theory of cardinal numbers in
plenty of detail, we give the general proof of the Dimension Theorem, we prove that
the dimension of R over Q is c, we recall the concepts of algebra and free algebra, we
list several well-known results in Topology and Functional Analysis, and we introduce
the spaces of functions and sequences of functions that are used throughout the work.
Chapter 2 contains the definitions of lineability and algebrability, as well as a criterion that provides a sufficient condition for an α-lineable set to be densely α-lineable,
which is used in the two remaining chapters.
Chapter 3 begins with a review of L’Hôpital’s Rule and an example of a function
to which it cannot be applied. Inspired by this function, we define the anti-L’Hopital
space on a given subset of R and characterise when it is non-empty. Finally, we obtain
the dense c-lineability and the strong c-algebrability of these spaces.
Chapter 4 has the same structure as the previous one. First we recall the concept
of uniform convergence, the Cauchy Criterion (which gives an equivalent condition
to uniform convergence) and the Weierstrass M Criterion (which gives a sufficient
condition). Then we construct an example of a sequence of functions which is uniformly
convergent but does not meet the hypotheses of the Weierstrass M Criterion. Next we
define anti-Weierstrass M spaces, we obtain a big family of examples and we use it to
show the c-lineability. Lastly, we prove a couple of technical lemmas and the strong
c-algebrability.
