Abstract | El alcohol es una sustancia psicoactiva mundialmente conocida y consumida, aunque
actualmente ha habido una disminución de dicho consumo durante la pandemia por
Covid-19. El metabolismo del etanol a nivel hepático ... El alcohol es una sustancia psicoactiva mundialmente conocida y consumida, aunque actualmente ha habido una disminución de dicho consumo durante la pandemia por Covid-19. El metabolismo del etanol a nivel hepático ocasiona severas consecuencias en el organismo, no solo en el hígado, sino en la mayoría de los órganos corporales, entre los que se encuentra el ojo. De entre todos los efectos perjudiciales que el alcohol genera en el sistema visual destacan alteraciones transitorias como una reacción pupilar más lenta, diplopía o congestión ocular, sin embargo, también es responsable de ciertas patologías como son el síndrome del ojo seco, degeneración macular asociada a la edad, cataratas, glaucoma y retinopatía diabética. Si bien, el principal mecanismo fisiopatológico por el que el alcohol perjudica al sistema visual es el estrés oxidativo, que implica un desequilibrio en el balance entre las especies reactivas de oxígeno (ERO) y las defensas antioxidantes. Y son las ERO las que en mayor proporción se producen como resultado de la ingestión de alcohol, y las que fundamentalmente afectan a las distintas estructuras del ojo. Así pues, es posible afirmar que la presencia de estos oxidantes es la principal causa de las enfermedades anteriormente mencionadas, aunque también habrá otros procesos que asimismo influirán. Por este motivo, se puede considerar que el uso de determinados antioxidantes como la luteína y zeaxantina, las antocianinas y las vitaminas A, C y E, juegan un papel fundamental en la prevención de dichas patologías. En cualquier caso, la controversia que existe frente a si el alcohol es verdaderamente perjudicial para la salud ocular o si los antioxidantes retrasan la aparición de las enfermedades mencionadas no se ha de despreciar y, por ello, es esencial seguir haciendo más estudios e investigaciones que ahonden en cómo el alcohol perjudica al órgano de la visión. |
