In this paper the author analyses the career of several families of portuguese sailors and pilots who settled down in Triana quarter during the 16th century, and their matrimonial strategies focused on the reproduction ... In this paper the author analyses the career of several families of portuguese sailors and pilots who settled down in Triana quarter during the 16th century, and their matrimonial strategies focused on the reproduction of the human and economic capital which based their social success, and their different ways to integrate in the sevillian society. The author shows the secular evolution of those strategies of social and familiar growing and integration, where we can notice a slow evolution by which the maritime professions were becoming less important comparing to mercantile and speculative activities (with real estate or annuities), which led to the fourth and fifth generations to neglect the maritime professions, which had been one of the main features of an important part of the portuguese population in the 16th century Seville. This was an historical and social process common to other families and professional sectors in the Spanish Monarchy |
