dc.description.abstract | Cancer is a disease that is present in our lives almost every day: we often hear news
from relatives or acquaintances who suffer from it. However, it is a pathology under study and
for which, to date, there is no treatment that is 100% safe and effective, although there are
drugs and methods that help alleviate its symptoms or make them a little more bearable. It is
undeniable that free radicals play a fundamental role in the development and progression of
cancer cells. Therefore, any method that contributes to reducing its concentration in the body,
thus ensuring a reduction in oxidative stress, is a guarantee of success in the prevention of these
pathologies. It must be considered that oxidative stress is one of the main causes of the
development of mutations and DNA damage, which can lead, among other pathologies, to
cancer.
Therefore, in antioxidants we find a window of opportunity to discover new processes
for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Their role in the human body is being studied, as
well as their optimal concentration in the body and in nutraceuticals. When considering the
administration of antioxidant agents as a complement, it should be evaluated the safety for the
patient, their suitability, the absence of harm to the health and that it does not undermine the
efficacy of the established cancer treatment. Therefore, it is necessary to acknowledge the
importance it deserves to scientific research, since with the funding and effort of many people
who love research, we can continue to find solutions, even if they are palliative, for this type of
aggressive pathology. | es |
