dc.description.abstract | In this Master's Thesis an initial state of the art is made in which the reader is put in situation on the different
renewable energy sources that exist, as well as the different types of energy storage systems that are available
today. Subsequently, it will focus on two storage systems: Lithium Batteries, which are the most advanced and
commercialized batteries in the current market—in fact, they are the batteries that have a daily use in the
world population in a very common way—and, on the other hand, the Flow Batteries, a technology with a
growing interest in researchers due to the good characteristics it presents and which are expected to be the
batteries of the future.
Initially, a brief introduction of renewable energies is made, making a classification of the
different types that exist, and commenting on the existing problems at present, along with the
benefits that can be generated in the future if these energies are managed in the correct way.
After this point, the focus is on energy storage technologies, where the importance of the
different types of technologies currently available for renewable energies is explained. From
there, attention is focused on Flow Batteries and Lithium Batteries, where the general
characteristics of the batteries are discussed, followed by a more exhaustive analysis of the two
types of batteries mentioned above and, finally, a comparison between them. In addition, a
section is included in which the implementation of a simulation block of flow batteries in a
commercial program is mentioned, which when executed allows us to interpret in a more visual
way what would be the operation of these in a real environment.
To conclude, the energy applications in which these technologies can be used are examined in
depth, providing an overview of the state of maturity of each of them, using the TRL
(Technology Readiness Level) scale devised by NASA and a technical comparison to visually
evaluate the battery that is most suitable for each type of application. | es |
