dc.description.abstract | In this text we will develop the design and further analysis of a Stirling engine and a 4-
Stroke, Internal Combustion engine, namely the Webster Engine.
Furthermore, a double objective is chasen: in the first place, we would like to show the
magnificient capabilities and characteristics of the computer-aided design tools and
softwares we will be using, being the most relevant the CATIA software, specifically on
his V5R19 version. Thus, the design section will be the main focus of this text.
However, the second and most important objective of this End-Of-Degree Project is
offering a mostly complete overview of these two engines, making this paper useful as a
guide for understanding how do they work, and their general characteristics. This means
we will not restrain ourselves to the design section; information about their historical
development, functioning, thermodynamics and applications will be also found here.
About the reasons of selecting specifically this pair of engines, we can find two answers
for that question. In the first place, they offer an interesting comparison, since both of
them belong to the same area of engineering, and they are designed to be close
competitors, but incidentally, the principles under they work and their general
characteristics are quite different. On the second hand, one of the most interesting
reasos for selecting these engines relies on the fact that both of them employ gas as their
main working fluid; this is something revolutionary in the engine industry, and it marks
the beginning of an era in which more ecological and sustanaible sources of energy
become a solid option against the historical dominance of fossil fuels.
Thus, we will start this tesis by making a review of the development of these two kinds
of engines along the years, followed by an introduction of the softwares which will be
used for the design and modeling (CATIA and Keyshot). Then we will show the main
chapter of this text: the desing and modeling section. The following chapters will cover
the aspects of the internal functioning of the engines, along with a study about the
thermodynamics they follow. We will conclude this End-Of-Degree Project with a
chapter in which we will show the advantages and disadvantages of each engine, and we
will remark the conclussions reached along the text. | es |
