Luis Buñuel Portolés, Luis Buñuel, or simply, Buñuel, is one of the most important filmmakers in the world, known both nationally and internationally. As a precursor of the 20th century cultural movement known as Surrealism and a member of the generation of 27th, he is characterized by making a critical social cinema, through humor, and with special attention to religion and the role of the Church, sowing the culture of the late Franco-Spanish period in exile (1959-1975). The present bibliographic review work consists of; first, to make known his figure as a filmmaker, as well as his critical thinking of religion and, explicitly, of the institution that supports it, the Church, involved in a certain socio-political context. All this, under the name of numerous theories that explain the critical phenomenon in cinema: is it art or not? As well as others that support the obligatory -or not - feeling of faith in the profession. Secondly, the study and aesthetic analysis of three characteristic films –particularly some scenes– as a sample of the criticism he makes towards the Christian religion and the ecclesial entity: Viridiana (1961), La Vía Láctea (1969) and El fantasma de la libertad (1974). |
