dc.description.abstract | This Project arises from the concern about acquiring knowledge of the possibility of implementing a hybrid aircraft platform, in which the contribution of the conventional gas turbine is
complemented by the power supply from an electric battery pack. In line with the growing global
trend, the aeronautical sector, as a pioneer, is moving towards the search for more environmentally
friendly aircrafts by reducing the associated emissions of polluting gases. In this sense, hybrid
aircrafts are considered, based on the current state of the art in terms of batteries, as an intermediate
or previous step to the achievement of fully electric designs.
The complete analysis of the underlying problem requires the initial implementation of the flight
profiles to be developed by the aircraft in question, and it is from them that the temporal evolution
of the power demands or fuel consumption will be deduced. The range of aircraft covered by the
study includes 3 airplanes of very different types and tonnage with a view to drawing conclusions
on the suitability of hybridization in some specific applications.
The modeling of the energy flows that must exist at each instant to meet the demands of the
aircraft requires the development of both an engine model and the characterization of the battery
stack. As for the engine, we will start with the study of its performance under design conditions in
order to allow a correct sizing of the turbomachines that make up the engine and ensure an adequate
performance outside the chosen design point. Due to the nature of the electric module, the pertinent
functions will be developed to model both the discharge of the batteries (power contributing to
the propulsion of the aircraft) and their recharge with power from the gas turbine to extend their
capacity.
The ultimate objective is to minimize a series of objective functions such as fuel consumption
or polluting gases emitted into the atmosphere by using optimization functions (such as fmincon,
lsqnonlin, surrogate opt or genetic algorithm) implemented in MATLAB that act on the mission
profile, discretized in time intervals according to the duration of the flight segment, to decide the
fraction of power that in each of them should be provided by the electric module, if it is better to act
as a 100% thermal engine or if ultimately the most profitable choice would be the recharge of the
batteries. | es |
