Our international system is evolving from a bipolar structure to a unipolar one and is moving towards a multipolarity. However, this multipolarity is unbalanced, and hence, unstable, with a Superpower struggling to keep its rivals at bay with decreasing resources (USA), another one whose only trump card is its nuclear arsenal (Russia) and a third one seeking to recover its ancient hegemonic role (China). On the other hand, the current nuclear non-proliferation regime is a legacy from the Cold War, and its design and operation are based on the distribution of power and technology at the time of its inception. As time passes and this distribution is more and more different from the one it was based on, this regime is less and less apt to achieve their pretended goals. Therefore, there is a high possibility of a re-activation of nuclear proliferation processes soon. |
