Líneas de fuga en la obra de arte: lo indeterminado, la ausencia, el vacío

Abstract

En la vivencia subjetiva de lo real puede distinguirse entre un momento de presencia o determinación y uno de ausencia o indeterminación. Diversas modalidades artísticas dan prioridad a uno u otro: unas se apoyan más en lo actual, lo material, lo presente; otras dan más valor a la actividad imaginaria del sujeto ante la obra, cuya materialidad actúa como mero acicate de ese imaginar. El énfasis en lo objetivo o lo subjetivo tiene claras implicaciones políticas, pues, como se argumentará, el arte de la presencia resulta en último término afín a una economía de consumo y de crecimiento continuado. Lo insostenible de este crecimiento en un planeta de recursos finitos permite augurar un porvenir de economías en recesión. El paso hacia semejante escenario resultará menos traumático desde actitudes que cuestionen la importancia de los objetos y aprendan a valorar lo inmaterial. La obra del vacío nos inicia en un imaginar que contempla y disfruta la realidad de un modo nuevo, más allá de las quimeras del consumo.

In the subjective experience of the real, a moment of presence or determination can be distinguished from one of absence or indeterminacy. Various artistic modalities give priority to one or the other: some rely more on the actual, the material, the present; others give more value to the imaginary activity of the subject before the artwork, which materiality acts as a mere spur of that imagining. The emphasis on the objective or the subjective has clear political implications, since, as will be argued, the art of presence is ultimately related to an economy of consumption and continued growth. The unsustainability of this growth on a planet of finite resources allows auguring a future of economies in recession. The step towards such a scenario will be less traumatic from attitudes that question the importance of objects and learn to value the immaterial. The artwork of the void initiates us in an imagining that contemplates and enjoys reality in a new way, beyond the chimeras of consumption.
