Belleza, kitsch y crítica

Abstract

El ideal romántico de belleza se revela muy problemático por su cercanía al kitsch. Hermann Broch teorizó sobre esta tesis y concluyó que el kitsch romántico encarnaba el antivalor no solo estético, sino también moral. Partiendo de estos supuestos, el presente artículo se propone mostrar que la crítica orientada a la interpretación de las obras de arte en clave simbólica o de contenidos pertenece a ese sistema kitsch. El artículo desarrolla ciertas implicaciones de las tesis anti-interpretación que Sontag y Barthes, entre otros, propusieron hace décadas. La conclusión es que la crítica ha de superar la conmoción romántica y su ideal de belleza, si quiere seguir siendo auténticamente tal.

The romantic ideal of beauty poses many threats due to its closeness to kitsch. Hermann Broch brooded over this thesis and concluded that kitsch, romantic in origin, embodied both the aesthetic and the moral antivalue. With this view in mind, we aim to show that the criticism focusing on a symbolic or content-oriented interpretation of works of art belongs to that system of kitsch. The present article reflects on some implications of the ideas that Sontag and Barthes, among other critics, put forth some decades ago. We conclude that literary and art criticism must overcome the romantic upheaval and its ideal of beauty in order to be truly authentic.
