The aim of this paper is to analyse how the different gender role orientations affect the emergence of individuals’ entrepreneurial intention. For the analysis, the sample facilitated by the ELITE Project has been used. This sample is made up of 2,191 people, mostly university graduates, whose intention to create a new venture is high. Once we have analysed the sample, the findings we obtain show that those individuals identifying themselves with androgynous or masculine gender role orientations exhibit a positive and much more robust relationship in order to develop a professional career in entrepreneurship. On the other hand, when we talk about the relation for stereotypically feminine role orientations, we find that the relationship is weaker. Our interpretation is that this situation is produced mainly by the social conceptions associated with each role. Finally, based on our findings, we conclude that a true necessity exits to develop policies and programmes, both public and private, aimed at increasing the levels of female entrepreneurship and thus reduce the differences between total rates. In addition, it is important to encouraging that entrepreneurial activity is no longer exclusively associated with a masculine profile. In this way, the concept of the entrepreneur will be considered as more inclusive for all individuals. |
