Abstract | La provincia de Huelva se encuentra en un lugar privilegiado dentro de la Comunidad Autónoma Andaluza limitando con el río Guadiana, el Algarve portugués, las ciudades de Badajoz y Sevilla, el río Guadalquivir y el Océano ... La provincia de Huelva se encuentra en un lugar privilegiado dentro de la Comunidad Autónoma Andaluza limitando con el río Guadiana, el Algarve portugués, las ciudades de Badajoz y Sevilla, el río Guadalquivir y el Océano Atlántico, además de contar con cuatro unidades paisajísticas-medioambientales de norte a sur (La Sierra - El Andévalo - La Campiña - y El Litoral) y estar surcada por dos ríos interiores Odiel y Tinto, condiciones naturales por las cuales la provincia onubense ha sido desde tiempos del Neolítico ocupada por pobladores que codiciaban la riqueza mineral del subsuelo. En referencia a la minería, la provincia cuenta con restos arqueológicos que datan una antigüedad del 4000 aC, pero no es hasta el año 1555 cuando aparece la primera mina onubense censada y a partir de 1700 cuando comienzan a llegar las compañías mineras a Minas de Riotinto, considerando un punto de partida el año 1873 cuando la empresa The Riotinto Company Limited se hace cargo de las mismas. Se llegó a producir a principios del siglo veinte un aumento de población en las zonas mineras de hasta un 1.188%, que se tradujo en la aparición de núcleos urbanos, en la dotación de equipamientos y en la ejecución de infraestructura férrea para conectar los lugares de explotación con los de embarque de mineral en el litoral, tanto en Riotinto, Huelva y Punta Umbría (entonces Cartaya). Los poblados y aldeas fueron proyectados y diseñados según el tipo de trabajo, el origen de nacimiento de los trabajadores y su preparación, apareciendo así en municipio de Minas de Riotinto los poblados y aldeas para obreros como el Alto de la Mesa en 1878, La Atalaya y La Dehesa en 1883, La Naya y Marín en 1876, así como un poblado para operarios denominado El Valle y otro para directivos denominado Bella Vista ambos en 1881. Igualmente en la capital de la provincia de Huelva se edificó un poblado para empleados cualificados denominado Reina Victoria en 1916 y en la localidad de Punta Umbría un poblado para directivos denominado comúnmente El Poblado Inglés en 1884. |
