Abstract | La búsqueda insaciable del “desarrollo a toda costa” oculta el hecho de que el planeta y sus recursos son limitados. En este contexto, la ciudad, como reflejo de la relación del hombre con la naturaleza, ha ido evolucionando ... La búsqueda insaciable del “desarrollo a toda costa” oculta el hecho de que el planeta y sus recursos son limitados. En este contexto, la ciudad, como reflejo de la relación del hombre con la naturaleza, ha ido evolucionando hacia un modelo insostenible, consumidor de grandes cantidades de recursos y generador de grandes cantidades de residuos. El modelo de ciudad que impera en los países desarrollados necesita para su funcionamiento una gran movilidad de recursos y personas, como señala la Agencia de Ecología Urbana de Barcelona1 “el actual modelo de desarrollo, basado casi exclusivamente en el consumo de recursos, se muestra claramente insostenible”. Tal es el impacto medioambiental de las ciudades que los daños derivados del modelo de producción y consumo urbano sobrepasan el ámbito local, generando graves problemas a escala global. Desde numerosas instituciones y organismos internacionales se está advirtiendo del peligro global que suponen las ciudades, así organizaciones como la Organización de Estados Iberoamericanos afirman que “el nexo entre la urbanización y el cambio climático es real y podría llegar a ser mortífero”.2 Los costes medioambientales no son los únicos a los que se enfrenta el modelo urbano. La ciudad, además de ser un lugar en el que habitan personas, condiciona la vida de sus habitantes y sus relaciones sociales. De esta forma, el modelo de producción y consumo de las ciudades no sólo conlleva graves problemas medioambientales, sino también importantes costes sociales. |
