Here we have studied every aspect as to the cancer stem cells concept in order to understand its importance in cancer and the way its environment may modulate its functions. For this purpose, an exhaustive research of the most relevant and up-to-date literature has been carried out. Much of the interest in the study of these cells lies in understanding how they could be targeted to carry out novel cancer treatments that eliminate the tumor without the risk of metastasis or relapse. For the same reason, part of our work is about the most useful cell culture models to study growth and response of these cells to different drugs. Thus, we state the existence of cancer stem cells is no longer questionable, we explained a new way of understanding cancer hierarchy, and we highlighted the key role certain cytokines exert in the interaction between cancer stem cells and its environment, as well as the role of three-dimensional cell culture models for this. These results represent a milestone when designing new treatments against cancer, which will undoubtedly undergo a revolution in the upcoming years. |
