This work assesses the potential thermal and economic performance improvement in Concentrated Solar Power plants (Solar Thermal Electricity) thanks to the utilisation of supercritical CO2 power cycles instead of the conventional steam-based Rankine cycles. For this, a detailed description of the architecture of these plants has been previously made, focusing on the so-called Power Block. With that in mind, the design of said block for a reference plant using steam turbines has been implemented in the EES equation resolution software. After that, a comparison was made between a Rankine cycle and a cycle that uses CO2 in a supercritical state using the SAM tool, specialized in economic calculations of thermodynamic processes. At the same time, supercritical cycles that use standard molten salts as heat transfer fluid and supercritical cycles that use other types of salts (enabling higher operating temperatures) have been compared with the Rankine cycle. The latter have reported much higher performance values than those experienced by the Rankine cycle. Indicators such as Net Present Value or Level Energy Cost have been chosen to carry out the economic study, the latter being extremely useful when comparing various energy processes. After carrying out the study, it is observed that the supercritical cycles experience greater uncertainty compared to the traditional ones, which may be motivated by the lower technological maturity that this technology possesses, as well as the poor reflection of its out-of-design behaviour by the current tools. That is why it would be necessary to reduce uncertainty and thereby carry out a refinement of the results obtained, making possible a fairer comparison between technologies. As a conclusion, it is therefore extracted that the use of supercritical CO2 in the power cycles does not introduce a radical improvement over the traditional Rankine cycle, which currently requires a thorough preliminary study when choosing the type of cycle to be used in a new project of this tipology. |
