Artículo Psychological well-being among European tourists on the Spanish Mediterranean coast: Results from the BlueTORRE study(Elsevier, 2026-06) Braçe, Olta; Correa Fernández, José; García Marín, Ramón; Celdrán Bernabeu, Marco Antonio; Garrido Cumbrera, Marco; Urbanística y Ordenación del Territorio; Geografía Física y Análisis Geográfico Regional; HUM981: Health & Territory ResearchThe aim of this study was to evaluate the psychological well-being of European tourists on the Mediterranean coast. The cross-sectional BlueTORRE study analyzed a sample of 534 unselected adult tourists through face-to-face interviews (October-November 2023). Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate factors associated with good psychological well-being. Overall, 22.3% of tourists reported good psychological well-being (WHO-5 > 50), while mean subjective happiness was 4.9 out of 7. Factors associated with good psychological well-being included younger age, greater weekly walking activity, lower screen use, and higher levels of happiness. These findings suggest that walking in coastal areas and reduced screen use are behaviours that may be relevant for supporting tourists' well-being during their stay.

Artículo Water system approach and natural-cultural capital in world heritage under climate stress: the Royal Alcázar in Seville and the Alhambra in Granada, Spain(MDPI, 2026) López Bravo, Celia; Del Espino Hidalgo, Blanca; Sovani, Aliza; Galiulo, Valentina; Historia, Teoría y Composición Arquitectónicas; Urbanística y Ordenación del TerritorioMany World Heritage Sites hold universal and exceptional values of a hybrid nature, combining cultural and environmental richness. Yet these complex dimensions are rarely recognised within their designation criteria, making it urgent to update their cultural valuation through the lens of social and environmental sustainability. In this context, water—as both a natural and a cultural asset—emerges as a fundamental element for understanding their natural–cultural capital. This study examines two World Heritage Sites in southern Spain—the Royal Alcázar of Seville and the Alhambra of Granada—which are particularly representative at the European scale due to their severe climatic conditions. The methodology is based on the analysis and mapping of their landscape conditions using historical cartography and Geographic Information Systems, together with a review of water-related attributes and values across their protection and management frameworks. As a result, their water systems are critically assessed within existing protection and management documents, a narrative approach to water as natural-cultural capital is proposed, and this approach is linked to the sites’ principal climate-related vulnerabilities and benefits. Overall, the study contributes to the international debate on biocultural heritage, supporting the need to update the water system approach applied to World Heritage Sites under conditions of climate stress.
Artículo San Cristóbal de la Laguna as a trial colonial city prior to the founding of Spanish American settlements: the influence of convent life on the city-territory(MDPI, 2026-01-05) Cubero Hernández, Antonio; Pérez Cano, María Teresa; Montero Fernández, Francisco Javier; Urbanística y Ordenación del Territorio; Proyectos Arquitectónicos; HUM700: Patrimonio y Desarrollo Urbano Territorial en Andalucía; HUM992: Arquitectura y ProspectivaStudies on colonial grid urban planning often use the later examples of cities founded in peninsular Spain towards the end of the 15th century as a basis for understanding the principles applied in new foundations in the Americas. This study proposes that the city of San Cristóbal de la Laguna (1496) functioned as a final urban-planning experiment, an intermediate point in the Canary Islands that enriched the experiences of early colonial urban planning. This first model of a city-territory, which lacked a defensive character due to its insularity, developed a grid adapted to the terrain, organising a new social order inspired by the religious doctrine of the time, in which religious architecture, mainly convents as well as churches, hermitages and hospitals, played a central role in the origin and consolidation of the city’s urban layout. By comparing this case study with the first American examples, Santo Domingo (1502), the first island city, and Panama Viejo (1519), the first city on the mainland, which are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, we are able to verify the influence of this intermediate urban planning model on the evolutionary process of the early colonial model and confirm the role of convent foundations as structural elements shaping the territory.
Artículo Destination central district: the representation of the conflict(Emerald Publishing, 2021) Macías Rodríguez, Damián; Del Espino Hidalgo, Blanca; Pérez Cano, María Teresa; Urbanística y Ordenación del TerritorioPurpose The purpose of this paper is to represent the conflict of touristification in the central district of Seville to evaluate the dimension of the problem. Therefore, it focuses on the diagnostic representation of the conflict between citizens and tourists, to help define the coexistence of opposing interests and to bring solutions in favour of a liveable urban landscape. Design/methodology/approach The research has implied a detailed analysis beyond the observation of data and statistics, which facilitated a complex diagnosis for decision-making. This has led to consider as an initial framework the main tourist resources, official agreements and civil manifestations regarding touristification. Then, factors of tourist density and one in-depth case study of changes in use have been mapped. Findings First, an analysis of the urban spaces affected by the tourist dynamics following the degree of habitability of the resident citizens has been led. Second, of the conflict resulting from a relationship between economic activities, the attractiveness of the urban landscape and the tourist use of the space has been mapped. Originality/value Through the study of the central district of a city of great heritage value where conflicts begin to occur as a result of tourism, it is intended to contribute to the development of the spatial syntax of the tourist conflict, what could lead to improve responsible urban and social city policies.
Artículo Urban and territorial dynamics of the single-monastic city: Perspectives from the Andalusian territory(Elsevier, 2026) Ostos Prieto, Francisco Javier; Aladro Prieto, José Manuel; Pérez Cano, María Teresa; Reicher, Christa; Historia, Teoría y Composición Arquitectónicas; Urbanística y Ordenación del Territorio; HUM965: Transhumancias: Hábitat, Salud, Patrimonio, Tecnología y Arte; HUM700: Patrimonio y Desarrollo Urbano Territorial en AndalucíaUrban development in Europe is strongly influenced by monastic institutions, which have shaped the evolution of cities from the 13th century to the present day. While previous studies have explored cities with multiple monastic foundations, this research introduces and defines the concept of the single-monastic city. They are urban settlements that have hosted only one monastery throughout their history. In the Iberian Peninsula, Andalusia stands out for its rich monastic heritage. Focusing on 19 Andalusian cities protected as Historic Sites (BIC), this study analyses the urban and territorial implications of isolated monastic foundations. Using a mixed-methods approach that combines spatial mapping, typological classification, and legal analysis, the research reveals that single monastic institutions exerted a more limited influence on urban morphology compared to cities with complex monastic systems. Continuity of use -particularly religious or civic- emerges as the key factor in the preservation of these buildings, rather than their location or architectural value. Furthermore, the findings suggest that isolated monastic buildings do not consistently shape the urban fabric but may leave symbolic or spatial traces depending on context, use, and institutional support. This study contributes to broader discussions on urban heritage by highlighting the vulnerability and underrepresentation of singular monastic structures. It calls for tailored conservation strategies that consider function as a central component of heritage sustainability.
Artículo The urban square as the origin of bullfighting architecture in Spain and Spanish America: key case studies(Polish Mineral Engineering Society, 2025-11-05) Romero Silva, Aura Liliana; Gonçalves, Marta; Mosquera Pérez, Clara; Pérez Cano, María Teresa; Urbanística y Ordenación del Territorio; HUM700: Patrimonio y Desarrollo Urbano Territorial en AndalucíaThe main squares of many towns typically feature specific architectural characteristics and dimensions that distinguish them from other, less relevant public spaces. These large, quadrangular spaces, were intended to host various civic and festive functions and festive activities, including celebrations, markets, and spectacles such as bullfighting. Their evolution, from medieval plazas to main Squares and eventually to bullrings, reflects the changing social and cultural needs of communities. Each type of bullring has played an important role in urban life, adapting to architectural and urban transformations throughout the history of cities. Bullrings have undergone a remarkable evolution since their origins. Initially, bullfighting events took place in castle parade grounds or town squares. However, from the 18th century onward, a radical shift occurred, leading to the construction to dedicated bullrings. These new structures adopted various shapes - square, hexagonal, and eventually circular - and were initially made of wood. In the Americas, the Ordinances of Discovery and Population of 1573 play a key role in establishing a standardised urban model in the Spanish colonies. These regulations aimed not only to organise the urban space but also to facilitate the celebration of public events, such as markets, processions, and equestrian festivals, which included bullfighting shows. The Main Squares, originally conceived as multifunctional spaces, gradually evolved to accommodate bullfighting spectacles, ultimately giving rise to bullrings. This study will analyse the morphological and functional transition from Main Squares to Bullrings, highlighting their impact on urban and cultural development. The future of bullrings depends on their ability to adapt to cultural and social changes, while maintaining their architectural and heritage value. Their continuity will rely on their capacity to reinvent themselves and respond to the needs of today's society.
Artículo Conflicts of Border Territories in Terms of Territorial Planning: The Interplay between Extremadura and Andalusia(Polish Mineral Engineering Society, 2025) Maruri Arana, Ainhoa; Pérez Cano, María Teresa; Urbanística y Ordenación del TerritorioIn Spain, one of the origins of territorial imbalances stems from the historical weakness of territorial planning legislation compared to purely urban planning, highlighting the shortcomings of a model that has not enjoyed an adequate comprehensive territorial approach, either in practice or in regulations. Territorial and urban planning powers are ceded to the 17 Spanish regions, but they are influenced by sectoral elements, which are the exclusive jurisdiction of the state if they affect more than one Autonomous Community, as is the case of the maritime-terrestrial public domain, the hydraulic public domain, or the planning of major infrastructure. This further complicates the issue of territorial planning, compounded by the fact that the consolidation of its legislative framework was fraught with numerous difficulties, requiring almost two decades, and, as previously mentioned, was not achieved equally across the regions. Currently, the approach to drafting legislation does not adapt to new demands, socioeconomic changes, or national or European proposals. It would be necessary for legislative proposals regarding territorial and urban planning to keep pace with social evolution, streamlining approval and management processes and providing real solutions to the many problems they entail. The fact that each Autonomous Community has different legislations, with different names and planning instruments, makes it difficult to achieve complete territorial cohesion and balanced development in Spain as a whole, since challenges that require this scale to achieve a comprehensive view: environmental, social, and cultural aspects, are not addressed. Territories should be resilient to natural or health disasters, while also being safe, accessible, and energy-efficient. To achieve this, planning instruments must guarantee these minimum standards. Specifically, the areas most sensitive to this situation are those located on regional borders, as is the case between Andalusia and Extremadura, which will be discussed. The research will reveal that the territory and its structural elements do not understand administrative boundaries, but are continuous. Ultimately, on both sides of the dividing line, there are two ways of managing and protecting these areas, which creates a conflict where they meet as internal borders. Therefore, the research is framed within a differentiated territorial-administrative context, both regional and provincial, which leads to unequal efforts when it comes to developing territorial and heritage protection policies, among others. The subject of this paper will be to understand the legislative framework regarding the Land Law, the Territorial Planning Law — and their regional and subregional plans — in order to analyze the existing discrepancies between the legislative framework of the two regions, Extremadura and Andalusia, and to identify their vulnerabilities in the border area in order to address the situation through some improvement proposals.
Artículo Bullring: culture, tradition and differences between Spain and Portugal(Polish Mineral Engineering Society, 2024-11-29) Romero Silva, Aura Liliana; Marçal Gonçalves, Marta; Mosquera Pérez, Clara; Pérez Cano, María Teresa; Urbanística y Ordenación del Territorio; HUM700: Patrimonio y Desarrollo Urbano Territorial en AndalucíaBullrings are emblematic places of the culture and tradition of each country where bullfights have been held for centuries. These events have been very popular in many parts of the world and have attracted thousands of fans over the years. Bullrings are considered by many to be cultural heritage and an important part of the history and tradition of many countries. Bullfighting celebrations continue to be important in the culture and tradition of the towns. In many bullrings, bullfights have been prohibited, but in other parts of the world, bullfights continue to be very popular and successful. However, in recent times, bullrings have been regarded by some as an inconvenient heritage site due to growing opposition to bullfighting and the banning of these events in some places. The comparative analysis between Spain and Portugal, a country with a bullfighting tradition influenced by Spain, shows that Spain is the country with the most bullrings in the world today. At the same time, Portugal has more than 200 bullrings throughout its territory. There are cultural differences in bullfighting between Spain and Portugal, but, as a tradition, bullfighting has deep roots in both countries. Although they share similarities in terms of the practice itself, there are significant cultural differences in both countries. These distinctions can be established from the style of the bullfight, the death of the bull, the clothing of the bullfighters, the use of the horses, the music performed during the festival and the posture or attitude towards the bullfighting activity. The importance of the resignification of bullfighting as cultural heritage is an integral part of the identity of many regions of Spain and Portugal and, protecting them, guarantees that this tradition is preserved and transmitted to future generations.
Artículo Is There a Historical Relationship Between Urban Growth and Resilience Loss? The Case of Floods in Belo Horizonte (Brazil)(MDPI, 2025) Salazar-Galán, Sergio; Granha Magalhães Gomes e Silva, Amanda; Sánchez Fuentes, Domingo; Mascort-Albea, Emilio J.; Urbanística y Ordenación del Territorio; Estructuras de Edificación e Ingeniería del Terreno; Junta de AndalucíaReducing the negative effects associated with floods in cities constitutes one of the highest-priority contemporary social challenges on the global sustainability agenda. In general, most historical studies focus on the consequences, but not on the causes of the phenomenon, which is essential for moving towards sustainable and resilient territories. The aim of this research is to quantify the effect that urban expansion has exerted on floods, taking the city of Belo Horizonte as a critical and representative case study. To this end, an integrative, qualitative, and quantitative approach has been developed, based on previous studies and on distributed hydrological modelling for the period 1940–2024. The results show that urban growth has contributed to a 7%, 14%, and 21% increase in the first three quartiles of annual floods. Likewise, the increase in the magnitude and frequency of the floods is also attributable, since it is more noticeable in the events of higher frequency than in those of lower frequency, in a range from 15% to 7%. The above results show the way in which the application of quantitative knowledge derived from the environmental history is highly useful for decision-making regarding the measures required to increase resilience, considering the possible effects of climate change. Thus, the recovery of the infiltration capacity of the soil constitutes a priority measure to reverse the effect that urban growth has exerted on the hydrological cycle.

Artículo Everyday and Modern Heritage: Endorsing the Inclusion of Emerging Heritages in the Catalogue of the Master Plan of the Historic Centre of the Central District of Honduras(Francis & Taylor, 2023) García Fernández, Antonio Jesús; Rey Pérez, Julia; González Morales, Ángel Luis; Historia, Teoría y Composición Arquitectónicas; Urbanística y Ordenación del TerritorioIn a period of accelerated urban transformation, there are certaintypes of heritage that are currently vulnerable due to the socialstrata or historical period they represent. Many of the buildings thatmake up the Historic Centre of the Central District of Honduras(HCCD) face this threat. This paper aims to identify and characterisethe HCCD built heritage from a broader perspective consideringemerging heritage that is linked to modernity and everyday life. Tothis end, a review was carried out of the heritage protection regis-ters in the Honduran Inventory of Immovable Cultural Assets(PIBICH) and other available tools such as the Catalogue of theMaster Plan (CMP) and citizen perceptions. The methodology char-acterises heritage assets in a new format by historical era and bytype. Data related to citizen perceptions, an asset’s conservationand ownership status were then analysed before a final comparisonwas carried out between the PIBICH and the CMP. The resultsgenerate a constructive and clarifying reflection on the policy docu-ments. The CMP generates a more inclusive, innovative and sustain-able vision of heritage and reveals the need for new heritageprotection with broader historical and conceptual perspectives, aswell as the participation of wider range of stakeholders
