By analyzing various techniques, including the use of parody, exaggeration, costumes and make-up, it considers the ways in which bodily humour operates within counter-hegemonic resistances through the use of pleasure, biopower and performances of new subjectivities. Nonetheless, it argues that neo-burlesque’s continued focus on bodily display and objectification set parameters on the types of resistances that can unfold.Artículo Infotainment on Russian TV as a tool of desacralization of Soviet myths and creation of a myth about the future(Universidad de Sevilla, 2014) Novikova, Anna A.This paper deals with the process of incorporation of “infotainment” in the Russian television industry. Professional journalism is analyzed as a tool for the interpretation of facts, which have contributed to erode the myths of mass consciousness, which were formed by Soviet propaganda. An analytical framework to evaluate the democratic quality of political discourse(Universidad de Sevilla, 2014) Ritzi, ClaudiaThe paper offers an analytical framework to evaluate the democratic quality of public discourses in Western democracies and discusses the consequences of a post-democratization of the public sphere. Referring to Colin Crouch, Jacques Ranciere and Sheldon Wolin it arguesthat the gradual transformation of western democracies to “post-democracies” is marked by neoliberal hegemony, which strengthened the influence of economic elites and decreased the political power of the citizenry without being accompanied by institutional change. As it is argued in the paper, it also leads to a structural transformation of the public sphere. By analyzing these changes we can even test the post-democratic assumptions empirically and evaluate the impact of neoliberal hegemony on public discourse.Artículo The Counter-Hegemonic Spectacle of Occupy Wall Street: Integral State and Integral Struggle(Universidad de Sevilla, 2014) Briziarelli, Marco; Martínez Guillem, SusanaIn this article, we explore the US social movement “Occupy Wall Street.” First, we look at how its members attempt to construct a counter-hegemonic ‘spectacle’ characterized by an unstructured, leaderless and ‘ideology-less’ organization enacted by a series of practices that utilize communication and re-signification as the main terrain of confrontation. Secondly, we draw on Gramsci in order to stress the importance of the “integral state”—a concept that emphasizes how a successful hegemonic project achieves a “historic bloc” only when it operates both at the level of state and civil society. We claim that Occupy Wall Street’s goals require an equally integral kind of struggle, one that operates at all of these multiple levels.Artículo En busca de la horizontalidad: variables clave y mezclas metodológicas para la creación de un proyecto de comunicación participativo glocal(Universidad de Sevilla, 2014) Fernández-Aballí Altamirano, AnaA partir de la cronología del proyecto “Art d Kambi: Teatro para la cre-acción colectiva Cuba-BCN”, se reflexiona acerca de diversas metodologías de comunicación participativa. Taking a historical overview, it provides an in-depth analysis of media, social and political issues, highlighting the implications and consequences of the marriage between neoliberalism and democracy for the Chilean public sphere and for the nature of the demands put forward by contemporary social movements.Artículo Translocal Frame Extensions in a Networked Protest: situating the #IdleNoMore hashtag(Universidad de Sevilla, 2014) Dahlberg-Grundberg, Michael; Lindgren, SimonThe aim of the present study was to examine how locally situated social movements can use social media to deploy translocally networked forms of protests. The study looks at the Canadian Idle No More movement, an indigenous and environmental grassroots initiative that emerged around the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013 as a reaction to previous neglect of indigenous groups and to the omnibus bill proposal C-45 (which threatened both the partial sovereignty of indigenous territories and the Canadian environment).
