Localising the Sustainable Development Goals. A Place-Based Analysis of Sustainable Development in Rural and Urban Areas
(Wiley, 2026) Olmedo Osuna, Lucas; Holloway, Paul; Barimo, John; O'Shaughnessy, Mary; Economía Aplicada I
There are increasing calls for a place-based approach towards the Sustainable Development Goals that show their territorial diversity at subnational level. Based on 33 indicators, covering 13 SDGs and aggregated in three sub-indexes (economy, social and environment), this paper develops a Sustainable Development Index for Rural and Urban Areas of Ireland (SDI-RUI) with high resolution data gathered at Small Area level (18,919 units for Ireland). Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and a 6-way rural–urban typology were used for a granular spatial analysis of sustainable development. Our analysis shows higher SDI-RUI values in the west of the country, especially in rural locations not far from cities. Low values are within the main cities of the country and in remote locations. The analysis also indicates that rural areas with high and moderate urban influence present more balanced sub-index scores and better overall SDI-RUI values than urban areas and highly rural/remote areas, stressing the relevance of examining territorial rural–urban linkages for sustainable development. The paper shows regional and local spatial patterns of sustainable development, supporting the potential of using GIS methodologies and rural–urban classifications to de- velop place-based policies and targeted measures related to the SDGs.

A Social Entrepreneurship Perspective of De-Carbonising the Footprint through Recycling Compensation: A Case Study of the NGO Madre Coraje
(Wiley, 2026) Fernández Serrano, José; Hueso Arrabal, Juan Alberto; Vega-Galeano, Orlando; Economía Aplicada I
This research analyses the carbon footprint of the NGO Madre Coraje, using an integrated methodology that combines the calculator provided by REAS (Red de Economía Alternativa y Solidaria) Navarra and the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). It quantifies emissions across the three scopes of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, evaluating both direct and indirect environmental impacts. The results highlight areas for improvement, particularly in the collection of detailed data on electricity usage, travel distances, and staff commuting, which currently limit the accuracy of the analysis. Furthermore, identification is made of the opportunities for the reduction of Scope 1 emissions through the adoption of electric vehicles and the increased use of renewable energy sources. The analysis not only reinforces Madre Coraje's commitment to sustainability, but it also provides a replicable framework for other NGOs to measure and improve their environmental sustainability. The proposed approach seeks to foster practices of greater responsibility that contribute towards mitigating climate change.

Evolution to a Sustainable Production System In The Chemical-Industrial Hub of Huelva Throughout the 21st Century
(Universidad de Almería, 2026-01) Asián-Chaves, Rosario; García Vázquez, Cinta Concepción; Vázquez Duarte, Andrés; Economía Aplicada I; Economía Aplicada II
A worldwide movement toward decarbonisation is transforming the chemical sector. Currently, sustainable production is a common goal across the entire ecosystem, involving chemical manufacturers, recycling companies, technology providers, and downstream industries. Embracing this transition is essential to promoting a low-carbon future for both the chemical industry and the markets it supports. Our objective is to study the current situation and recent developments in the Huelva Chemical Complex. Since 1964, when the chemical complex began operations, the Andalusian region has become a highly attractive location for the industrial sector in general and the chemical sector in particular. Today, 60 years after, it remains one of Spain's main industrial centres and has around twenty companies dedicated to the production of petroleum refining, petrochemicals, biofuels, metallurgy, electricity generation (through combined cycles, biomass, cogeneration, and other systems), both organic and inorganic, and fertilizers. But the challenges that industrial areas must face today go beyond the demands of growth and new forms of production. Environmental and social challenges occupy a prominent place in the requirements of Pillar 2 of Horizon Europe, the Spain 2030 Industrial Policy (Component 12 of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan), and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this article, we want to highlight how, over the years, companies in the Huelva Hub have committed to increasing production through innovation, adapting to the challenges of environmental sustainability. Therefore, many of their innovative projects have been oriented toward respect for the environment and a commitment to decarbonisation

El impacto económico del enoturismo en España, 2008-2022: una aproximación cuantitativa
(Universidad de Alicante, 2026-07-01) Vázquez Duarte, Andrés; García Vázquez, Cinta Concepción; Economía Aplicada I

Benchmarking tourism digitalization in the EU: evidence from a multi-criteria approach
(Emerald, 2025) González Rodríguez, María Rosario; Díaz Fernández, María del Carmen; Economía Aplicada I; Administración de Empresas y Marketing; Ministerio de Industria, Turismo y Comercio. España
Purpose – The goal of this research is to provide a comparative assessment of tourism digitalization among European Union (EU) member states from the digital indicators of the EU Tourism Dashboard. To achieve this, the study identifies regional disparities, benchmarks national performance and informs targeted digital transformation strategies within the tourism sector. Design/methodology/approach – Using standardized digital indicators, the study constructs a synthetic composite index through the double reference point method and applies entropy weighting for indicator aggregation. This method enables an objective evaluation of each country’s digital maturity, focusing on multiple dimensions including information and communication technology infrastructure, digital skills, e-commerce and platform integration. Findings – The results reveal significant regional differences in digitalization level across the EU. Spain stands out as a digitally mature destination, showing consistent improvement and a balanced performance across all indicators, whereas Italy, Slovakia and Czechia display negative trends. In contrast, Poland and Bulgaria demonstrate significant digital advancements. Practical implications – The benchmarking approach allows policymakers and tourism managers to pinpoint areas of strength or weakness, guiding investment and enabling the design of targeted interventions to enhance digital skills and infrastructure, contributing to the resilience of EU destinations in the post-pandemic era. Originality/value – This research advances the field by leveraging the standardized EU Tourism Dashboard indicators and applying a rigorous multi-criteria methodology, thus filling a gap in comparative digitalization studies at the national level.

Organizational culture and innovation in small businesses in Paraguay
(Elsevier, 2020) Sánchez Báez, Edgar Antonio; Fernández Serrano, José; Romero Luna, Isidoro; Economía Aplicada I
This paper studies the influence of organizational culture on the implementation of innovations in small businesses. Cameron and Quinn's competing values framework is applied to capture the organizational culture. The empirical analysis is carried out using a sample of 194 small businesses from two regions in Paraguay: the Asunción area and Central Department. Organizational cultures with external orientation (adhocratic and market) are found to have a significant positive impact on innovation. However, the effect of organizational culture on the specific types of innovation (product, process, organizational, and marketing) differs. Hierarchical culture shows a positive influence on process innovation.

Technological capabilities and global value chains: insights from Spanish SMEs in the hotel industry
(Emerald, 2024) Romero Luna, Isidoro; Fernández Serrano, José; Cáceres Carrasco, Felipe Rafael; Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). España; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España
Purpose – This study explores the role of international tour operators as the agents assuming the governance and the upgrading of the tourism global value chains (TGVCs), with a special focus on their influence on the development of technological capabilities (TCs) in the hotel industry. Design/methodology/approach – The data used in this article originates from a survey carried out in 2016 on Spanish small and medium-sized hotel companies. An ordinal regression analysis is employed to test the hypotheses proposed in this research. Findings – This study finds that tour operators exert a positive effect on the technological upgrading process in the hotel industry by stimulating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to invest in TCs. The causal mechanisms through which these effects take place differ across the various stages of the relationship between hotel companies and tour operators. Practical implications – The results have implications both for hotel management in terms of how hotels take advantage of technological upgrading to become more competitive, and for public administrations in terms of what measures can boost the development of hotel TCs in order to increase their added value. Originality/value – To date, very few studies have analysed the tourism sector based on the influence on the development of TCs of SME hotels by combining GVC concepts and the resource-based view. It is also the first time that the causal mechanisms are shown to explain such influences

Drivers of pro-environmental behaviour: A mediated analysis of perceived risk, functionality, and post-purchase dissonance
(Elsevier, 2025) Tomar, Awantika; Srivastava, Sumita; Fernández Serrano, José; Tomar, Akriti; Economía Aplicada I
This study examines what influences green consumer behaviour by focusing on the roles of perceived risk, product functionality and post-purchase dissonance (PPD) in shaping pro-environmental actions. Data was collected through a structured survey of 260 rooftop solar-panel users in a Tier-II city in Northern India. The results show that perceived risk negatively affects pro-environmental behaviour. The study also found that PPD plays a key mediating role, both between perceived risk and proenvironmental behaviour and between product functionality and pro-environmental behaviour. Product functionality also directly influences pro-environmental behaviour and reduces PPD, which in turn increases environmentally responsible actions. Lower dissonance leads to greater consumer satisfaction and encourages ongoing green behaviour. These findings indicate that reducing perceived risk and addressing postpurchase concerns can help governments and companies design highly effective strategies to promote sustainable consumer choices.

The dynamic slack-performance relationship from an efficiency perspective
(2021) Agustí Pérez, María de las Aguas; Velasco Morente, Francisco; Galán González, José Luis; Administración de Empresas y Marketing; Economía Aplicada I; Contabilidad y Economía Financiera; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). España
The article aims to analyse the behaviour of firms in terms of managing their slack resources from the perspective of efficiency when faced with a generalised crisis. From a sample of 419 Spanish companies in 2006, 2010 and 2014, a cluster analysis was carried out to identify their position in relation to slack resources (whether there was an excess or a deficiency). Taking this position into account, a data envelopment analysis was carried out which allowed the efficiency frontier to be analysed with respect to the different performances of the company. The results show firstly how companies' resource endowment is affected as a result of adaptation to the crisis and, in turn, how said adaptations accentuate the efficiency of the companies. The management of capacity and resources is an element that companies have failed to prioritise. The recent financial crisis and the current crisis underline the importance of maintaining and managing these resources beyond the vision of simply reducing slack as shown by many companies. The study has two particularities. First, it analyses the changes before, during and after one of the most important crises. Second, the complexity of the phenomenon means that a multiple methodology must be adopted.

Exercise Therapy Versus Manual Therapy for the Management of Pain Intensity, Disability, and Physical Function in People With Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression
(Wiley, 2025) Gónzalez Gómez, Luis; Moral Muñoz, José A.; Rosales Tristancho, Abel; Cuevas Moreno, Alejandro; Cardellat González, Melania; Rodríguez Domínguez, Álvaro José; Economía Aplicada I
Background and Objective: Guidelines recommend combining physical and psychological programmes for chronic low back pain (CLBP); however, exercise therapy (ET) and manual therapy (MT) are often delivered separately. This systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to compare the efficacy of ET with MT in terms of pain intensity, disability and physical function in people with CLBP. Databases and Data Treatment: MEDLINE, Web of Science, PEDro, Cochrane Library and Scopus were searched July–August 2024 for RCTs comparing ET with MT in participants aged 18–54 years. Outcomes were extracted for the short-, medium- and long-term follow-up periods. Risk of bias (RoB 2.0 Cochrane Tool) and certainty of evidence (GRADE) were appraised. Results: Six RCTs (743 patients) were included. Meta-analyses showed, albeit non-clinically relevant, a significant difference for long-term in favour of ET for disability (SMD = −0.25, 95% CI [−0.43, −0.07], p = 0.007). Meta-regression showed that the female–male ratio, treatment duration and mean age explain variability in pain intensity and disability. Conclusions: ET had a small beneficial effect on long-term disability in people with CLBP. Nevertheless, evidence does not pro- vide conclusive differences between both the treatments overall, influenced by heterogeneity and the number of studies included. Biopsychosocial factors may moderate the differences in outcomes. The GRADE assessment revealed very low certainty across all outcomes, highlighting the lack of high-quality research. Significance Statement: ET may offer small long-term benefits over MT for disability in people with CLBP. Differences seem to be influenced by sex, age and treatment duration. The choice of ET over MT, or vice versa, as a stand-alone treatment does not appear to be supported by current evidence.

Meta-analysis of consumers’ trade-offs between range and charging infrastructure for electric vehicles
(Elsevier, 2024) Rosales Tristancho, Abel; Carazo, Ana F.; Brey, Raúl; Lindhjem, Henrik; Economía Aplicada I
The failure of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to provide sufficiently long ranges in a relatively short charging time (as compared with conventional vehicles) is one of the main technical bar- riers to consumers’ adoption of these vehicles. However, this technical barrier could be mitigated if consumers were willing to trade-off lower ranges with better charging infrastructure. This paper analyses trade-offs individuals are willing to make between range and en-route charging station availability when considering the purchase of BEVs. By means of a meta-regression analysis of 33 stated preference studies, we find that consumers are willing to accept compensations for lower ranges in form of more dense charging infrastructure in their BEV purchase decision, but only when BEV ranges are longer than 250–300 km. This result is very relevant to promote the transition to BEVs because it shows that, in some circumstances, a significant technical barrier can be overcome with infrastructure investments.

The effect of personal values on both entrepreneurial intentions and new venture creation: A longitudinal analysis
(Sage, 2025) Cáceres Carrasco, Felipe Rafael; Fernández Serrano, José; Jaén Figueroa, Inmaculada; Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España
This article focuses on the influence of personal values (PVs) on entrepreneurial intention (EI) and new venture creation (NVC). The analysis is based on Schwartz’s PV theory and assumes that entrepreneurship is a process. A longitudinal analysis was conducted using partial least squares structural equation modelling with data from two surveys in which the same individuals were interviewed in 2010 and 2023. The findings provide valuable insights into the role played by PVs in the relationship between EI and NVC. This contributes to a deeper understanding of why, over time, a substantial proportion of individuals with EIs fail to initiate a business. Furthermore, the results provide empirical support relevant to the ongoing debate concerning stability, versus change, in PVs over time.

Assessing the influence of perceived competencies and self-efficacy on growth intentions during the entrepreneurial process
(Emerald, 2025) Santos Cumplido, Francisco Javier; Fernández Serrano, José; Guzmán Alfonso, Carmen; Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Economía. España
Purpose This research studies entrepreneurs’ growth intentions in the birth and persistence stage of the entrepreneurial process by considering how they are affected by changes in self-efficacy and the self-perceptions of two kinds of key entrepreneurial competencies: energizer and social competencies. Design/methodology/approach To test the hypotheses, a methodology based on partial least square was applied using data from a survey of two samples, one of nascent entrepreneurs and another of established entrepreneurs. This has allowed a multi-group analysis to be carried out. Findings In addition to confirming the critical role of self-efficacy as both a mediating and stable variable between perceived competencies and growth intentions during the entrepreneurial process, the most intriguing finding is that perceived energizer competencies have an increasing influence on growth intentions as nascent entrepreneurs transition into established entrepreneurs. Conversely, perceived social competencies significantly lose their direct influence but retain some indirect influence through self-efficacy. Practical implications On the one hand, policy-makers should reconsider their policy orientation beyond the usual practice of subsidizing the formation of start-ups and begin supporting growth-oriented firms to strengthen their weaknesses in social competencies. On the other hand, entrepreneurship education needs to reinforce new tools for developing social competencies. Originality/value This research contributes new insights into the entrepreneurial process and its determinants from a dynamic perspective. Specifically, it helps understand how self-efficacy and self-perceived competencies may evolve throughout the entrepreneurial process and their influence on entrepreneurial growth intentions, an area that has been scarcely explored in the existing literature.

A study on how food colour may determine the categorization of a dish: predicting meal appeal from colour combinations
(World Scientific Publishing, 2022) Casales García, Vicente; Falomir, Zoe; Museros, Lledó; Sanz, Ismael; González Abril, Luis; Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España; Ministerio de Economia y Comercio
A person’s preference to select or reject certain meals is influenced by several aspects, including colour. In this paper, we study the relevance of food colour for such preferences. To this end, a set of images of meals is processed by an automatic method that associates mood adjectives that capture such meal preferences. These adjectives are obtained by analyzing the colour palettes in the image, using a method based in Kobayashi’s model of harmonic colour combinations. The paper also validates that the colour palettes calculated for each image are harmonic by developing a rating model to predict how much a user would like the colour palettes obtained. This rating is computed using a regression model based on the COLOURlovers dataset implemented to learn users’ preferences. Finally, the adjectives associated automatically with images of dishes are validated by a survey which was responded by 178 people and demonstrates that the labels are adequate. The results obtained in this paper have applications in tourism marketing, to help in the design of marketing multimedia material, especially for promoting restaurants and gastronomic destinations.

Analyzing aesthetics, attractiveness and color of gastronomic images for user engagement
(Elsevier, 2025) Casales García, Vicente; Museros, Lledó; Sanz, Ismael; González Abril, Luis; Economía Aplicada I; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación
Foodstragramming refers to how people share images of food through social media in order to have an impact on potential consumers. Hence, foodstragramming images is a way for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to create loyal customers and promote gastronomic tourism. An approach for analyzing foodstragramming images is presented in this paper and also their related comments published by the Getcookingcanada Instagram account, which belongs to a cooking school. The S-O-R (Stimulus-Organism-Response) model is used to study the emotions and impact on viewers of these Instagram images. Our approach evaluates the user’s preferences according to the gastronomic images and their comments and number of likes. The approach suggests possible moods or emotions that a user can have when looking at these gastronomic images based in the colors of the images, and also it studies the sentiment elicited from the comments. The analysis was performed using a variance-based structural equation modeling method called Partial Least Squares (PLS). The obtained results show a structural model between the sentiment associated to the comments, the number of likes, and moods or emotions that can be extracted from each image. Images that evoke a positive sentiment also have a higher number of likes and comments. Also, it is shown that gastronomic images evoke the adjectives Romantic and Healthy due to the food color of the images. These adjectives produce a positive sentiment, which drive a positive behavioral intention.

Efficient entrepreneurial culture: a cross-country analysis of developed countries
(Springer, 2018) Fernández Serrano, José; Berbegal Zaragoza, Vanesa; Velasco Morente, Francisco; Expósito García, Alfonso; Economía Aplicada I; Junta de Andalucía
Entrepreneurship, together with national cultural values, may improve a country’s GDP levels. Under this hypothesis, the aim of this paper is to analyse the relationships between the levels of entrepreneurship, cultural values, and of GDP per capita in a sample of 27 developed countries, by identifying an efficient combination of culture and entrepreneurship variables, under the con- cept of efficient entrepreneurial culture, that maximises GDP per capita. Through the application of Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) methodology, nine countries have been identified as having an efficient entrepreneurial cul- ture. The implications derived for policy-makers are substantial, since a better understanding of cultural effects on entrepreneurship can lead to improvements in the design of governmental programmes that foster cultural values related to high-quality entrepreneurship.

Formulación del perfil de los problemas empresariales del entorno de Sevilla mediante el mapa relacional de inquietudes empresariales
(Alta dirección, 2008) Tamayo Gallego, Juan Aurelio; Gamero Rojas, Francisco Javier; Martínez Román, Juan Antonio; Administración de Empresas y Marketing; Economía Aplicada I

Analysis of innovation in SMEs using an innovative capability-based non-linear model: A study in the province of Seville (Spain)
(Elsevier, 2011) Martínez Román, Juan Antonio; Gamero Rojas, Francisco Javier; Tamayo Gallego, Juan Aurelio; Economía Aplicada I; Administración de Empresas y Marketing
This article analyzes organizational characteristics associated with innovative outcomes of SMEs in local economies with a low level of technological and R&D activities, where the indicators generally used to gauge technological innovation do not offer sufficient data. For the study of innovation in such economies, we propose a conceptual model based on innovative capability which also includes explanatory variables of environment and other contextual factors of the firms. Through a process of filtering spurious variables and incorporating quadratic components, we have varied the original linear structure to form a quadratic model with greater explanatory capacity and better results. The resulting quadratic model has undergone various contrasts of hypotheses, thus demonstrating the effectiveness of the model as a whole and of its basic components, as well as the importance of the main explanatory variables. Finally, the model has also proven to be valid in all sectors.

About the determinants of the degree of novelty in smallbusinesses’product innovations
(Springer, 2013) Martínez Román, Juan Antonio; Romero Luna, Isidoro; Economía Aplicada I; Junta de Andalucía
This paper explores the nature and determinants of product innovation insmall businesses from a survey of more than 1,500 small firms in Spain. Two levels offactors affecting innovation are considered: (1) The personal characteristics of theentrepreneurs -their age, motivations, educational background and degree of interper-sonal trust. (2) The characteristics of the organizations’management—cooperation, risktaking, proactivity and specific innovation and growth policies. The paper shows that thefactors explaining the firms’decisions to introduce small incremental innovations -andthe strength of these influences- are different, to a large extent, from those favoringsubstantial product innovations.
