The aim of this study is to analyze the health effects experienced by people over 65 years engaged in a network of gardens already established in Barcelona. An exploratory descriptive design was conducted, by semi-structured interviews with six gardeners from Barcelona to discuss their perceptions regarding how their participation in the urban gardens influenced their health. Gardeners said they had perceived an increase in physical activity, quality (but not quantity) of the vegetables they consume and in social relationships, and benefits to their psychological well-being. The inclusion of vegetable gardens in cities seems to provide numerous benefits, such us promoting healthy environments and lifestyles and increasing urban sustainability, so it is proposed as a possible strategy to address multiple problems in a cross-cutting manner.Artículo Alternative Food Systems and Peri-Urban Agriculture in Milan, Italy.(Universidad de Sevilla, 2013) Corrado, AlessandraThe turn towards quality in consumption and lifestyles has in recent years been matched by a profound shift in farming models. New social, environmental, and landscape functions have been included in the sustainable farming strategies of organic and multifunctional agriculture, short chains, direct selling, and farmers’ markets. In metropolitan regions and their peri-urban areas demand by local inhabitants and a reorganization of food production are driving a territorial transition towards sustainability. Consumers and producers are cooperating in food networks not only to regain control over the ways food is produced and to shape local alternative markets but also to establish true food sovereignty. This article presents the case of the Rural Solidarity Economy District of the South Milan Agricultural Park, where a reorganization of peri-urban agriculture and new forms of producer-consumer cooperation are promoting the transition towards alternative food systems. The analysis highlights the aspects of change related primarily to the reorganization of the model of a farming enterprise and to the subjectivities emerging as “new peasants”, using a critical approach with respect to their social role, to agricultural practices, and to food, with new cognitive and relational skills developed in the practical and shared construction of territorial sustainability and food sovereignty.Artículo La agricultura urbana en Sevilla: entre el derecho a la ciudad y la agroecología(Universidad de Sevilla, 2013) Dimuro Peter, Glenda; Soler Montiel, Marta María; Manuel Jerez, Esteban de; Universidad de Sevilla. Even though, urban agriculture is still alive and new civil agroecological initiatives have emergedin the last decades. In these projects, agriculture proves to be a multifunctional activity that becomes a tool for the empowerment of new social groups to reclaim their right to the city, right that is usually ignored in the city design and construction. New social entities, that generate new dynamics in the social production of urban habitat, rise up through agroecological urban agriculture.
