Artículo Gender and lexical distribution of subject-characterizing -ly adverbs(Charles University, 2025) Jiménez Pareja, Sandra; Díaz Negrillo, Ana; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Subject-orientation and subject-relatedness have been defined as properties of adverbs that have the ability to characterize the subject, the former simultaneously with the expression of adverbial meaning as circumstance. According to the definition of subject-related -ly adverbs as subject-oriented adverbs that can only characterize the subject, subject-relatedness would be expected to be dependent on subject-orientation, also because it is farthest from the prototypical function and meaning of -ly words and well into the prototypical function and meaning of adjectives. As this syntactic and semantic behavior is not signaled formally, it parallels, in principle, what happens in conversion, where syntactic transposition is without phonological change. Based on the evidence of 29,759 bigrams extracted by lemma from the Corpus of Contemporary American English, this paper analyzes the genre distribution of subject-oriented and subject-related -ly words, and their most relevant lexical features. The results show similarities and also differences in the behavior of subject-orientation and subject-relatedness as regards text genre distribution and in their formation from various types of adjectival bases. The interpretations of these results are manifold, within and outside word-formation processes.
Artículo The swarm-alternation in Romance languages: the fine line between causes and sources(2025-12-26) Gómez Vázquez, Diana; Mateu Fontanals, Jaume; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España; HUM685: Lexicón Inglés-EspañolThe swarm-alternation shows two variants, where the locatum and location alternate their positions: in the locatum-subj variant (The bees swarm in the garden), the locatum appears in subject position, whereas the location surfaces as a PP. In turn, in the location-subj variant (The garden swarms with bees), the location appears as the subject, and the locatum is introduced by a preposition (de/di “of” in Spanish, Catalan, and Italian). We argue that the locatum-PP is, in fact, the element introducing the initiator of the event in the latter variant. This is so because the subject is a non-theta selected element, functioning as the undergoer of the event; hence, it does not meet the requirements to initiate it. As to the locatum-subj variant, the locatum subject works as the initiator and undergoer of the event. Furthermore, we show that the argument structure of these verbs consists of both process and initiation phrases in Ramchand’s first phase syntax. While the location-subj variant is consistently unergative, the locatum-subj variant can also be unaccusative as is the case with verbs such as overflow or abound.
Artículo Haru in the Care Network: Stakeholder Perspectives on Privacy with Social Robots in Pediatrics(Association for Computing Machinery, 16/10/2025) Levinson, Leigh; Álvarez Benito, Gloria; Amores Carredano, José Gabriel De; Szapiro, Deborah; Gomez, Randy; Šabanović, Selma; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); HUM547: JuliettaSocial robots are beginning to be utilized as part of the collective networks supporting pediatric treatment, however there are few studies on children’s perceptions of these agents in hospitals from a privacy and safety perspective. Through a mixed-method and value-sensitive design approach, we introduced hypothetical vignettes and engaged in discussion with 15 youth who are either receiving cancer treatments or are in remission (ages 6-25), 11 of their parents, and 5 out of 8 of their clinical staff to learn how stakeholders in pediatric oncology discuss privacy concerns regarding child-robot interactions. Our thematic analysis imparts how stakeholders perceive robots as social, non-authoritative extensions of the hospital’s care network. From this privacy-sensitive perspective, this study revealed that for maximizing a robot’s social utility within care systems while critically engaging with the comfort and privacy preferences of stakeholders, robots should take on the role of 1) mediators of social interaction among various stakeholders, 2) companions for children and 3) informational tools for clinicians when consent is given by the family. We emphasize how assistive technologies in pediatrics should continue to be co-designed within communities for identifying appropriate roles and returning agency to stakeholders as they navigate the blurry boundaries of privacy in healthcare.
Artículo Vulgar Minimisers in English and Spanish(Wiley, 2025-11-05) Jiménez Fernández, Ángel Luis; Tubau, Susagna; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); Generalitat de Catalunya Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad; HUM685: Lexicón Inglés-EspañolIn this paper, we investigated whether vulgar minimisers form a natural class in Englishand Spanish by evaluating (i) their similarities and differences with respect to non-vulgar minimisers and (ii) whether vulgar minimisers are inherently negative in these languages. We proposed that vulgar minimisers in the two languages are lexically ambiguous between polarity-sensitive items and quasi-negative expressions containing a local negation as part of their structure. As polarity-sensitive items, vulgar minimisers show similarities with non-vulgar minimisers when it comes to compulsory co-occurrence with the sentential negative marker, compulsory co-occurrence with not/ni ‘not even’ infragment answers and when preposed, and triggering of subject-auxiliary inversion when preposed. By contrast, as quasi-negative expressions containing a local negation aspart of their structure vulgar minimisers are allowed to optionally co-occur with the sentential negative marker and not be preceded by not/ni ‘not even’ when occurring as fragment answers or when preposed. We also argued that the internal negation in (quasi-)negative vulgar minimisers can only take narrow scope, thus resulting in sentences with vulgar minimisers being diagnosed as non-negative by sentential negation tests.
Artículo Subordinator language preference in English-Spanish code-switching in adolescent bilinguals from the Canary Islands(SAGE, 2025) Lewis, Aimée-Elizabeth; Jiménez Fernández, Ángel Luis; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España; HUM685: Lexicón Inglés-EspañolObjectives: Research has focused on English and Spanish code-switching on many occasions, but not in immigration communities in the Canary Islands, where bilingual adolescents are acquiring language in a multilingual environment due to immigration influxes. Methodology: We tested intrasentential, inter-clausal code-switching constructions with bilingual adolescents in Yaiza, Canary Islands. We analysed the results in relation to subordinator acceptability and language dominance to propose this community as a legitimate interest point for bilingual language research. Analysis: We used a forced-choice Likert-type scale to judge sentences in which the main clauses, subordinators, and subordinate clauses alternated between English and Spanish. We contrasted our results against the hypotheses and interpreted them with statistical analysis. Findings: Subjects showed high acceptability towards code-switching and preference towards constructions in which subordinator and subordinate clauses were in the same language. We could not confirm preference towards Spanish-dominated constructions (based on the work by Torres Cacoullos). Subjects were more inclined towards predominantly English sentences (work by Liceras et al. on dominance and grammar preference). Our statistical analysis showed that the highest rated language combination held no relation to language preference. Our findings support the possible integration of the two grammars into a single system since our informants accepted mixed language with no restrictions, orthogonal to our goal in this paper. In addition, we suggest that demographic changes in these communities might influence bilinguals in their grammar preferences. Originality: This study is the first of its kind to consider immigration communities in the Canary Islands as an opportunity for bilingual syntax research. Significance: The results provide groundwork for further investigations and are currently being extended to incorporate data from recognised code-switching communities.

Artículo Mood selection in the old Northumbrian gloss to Durham MS A.IV.19(John Wiley & Sons, 2025-07) Fernández Cuesta, Julia María; Langmuir Thomson, Christopher Eric; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); HUM174: Diacronía y Dialectología del InglesThe aim of this article is to examine the use of the subjunctive in the 10th-century OldNorthumbrian gloss to Durham MS A.iv.19. We assess whether there is evidence for aweakening of the indicative/subjunctive opposition, as has been argued for the earliergloss to the Lindisfarne Gospels, which was the work of the same glossator, Aldred ofChester-le-Street. For this purpose, we analyse the subjunctive forms in both main andsubordinate clauses in conjunction with their Latin lemmata, taking into account boththeir syntactic context and cotext. We also examine the factors that may have conditionedAldred’s selection of mood and, additionally, address instances in which his glossesappear to correct erroneous Latin lemmata. No evidence was found for the breakdown ofthe subjunctive category in Durham Collectar, which may be related to features of thistext type. Our study also identifies corrections of erroneous Latin inflections in the textand, conversely, potential misrecognition of the forms of the relevant Latin lemmata.

Artículo Analogical Changes in the Nominal Morphology of Owun's gloss to the Rushworth Gospels(Taylor & Francis, 2024) Rodríguez Ledesma, M. Nieves; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); HUM174: Diacronía y Dialectología del InglesThis article offers a quantitative study of the genitive and nominative/accusative plural inflections in Owun’s gloss (Rushworth2) to the Rushworth Gospels in comparison with Aldred’s gloss to the Lindisfarne Gospels. It focuses on three inter-paradigmatic analogical changes attested in Rushworth2: 1) the extension of genitive singular -es from the a-stems to other noun classes, 2) the spread of nominative/accusative plural -as from masculine a-stems to neuter a-stems and other declensions, and 3) the extension of genitive plural -ena from the weak nouns to a-stems. The main aim of this article is to establish the scale on which these analogical changes are found in Rushworth2. The results are compared with those obtained in the study of Lindisfarne in order to determine the degree of similarity between the two glosses with regard to these processes and shed light on the question of whether Owun copied from Aldred or not.

Artículo To move or not to move: Is focus on the edge?(Cambridge University Press, 2024-12-03) Jiménez Fernández, Ángel Luis; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); HUM685: Lexión inglés-españolA discourse-syntax interface-based approach to three types of focus – Information Focus, Corrective or Contrastive Focus, and Mirative Focus – is discussed in this paper. In my approach, I address the role of discourse/agreement features in the syntactic process of Agree in the Minimalist Program as well as their possible combination with an Edge Feature to trigger attraction of each discourse category, comparing Spanish and English. The data I examine are taken from experimental work, based on two original experiments that test the grammaticality/acceptability of sentences with fronted and in situ focus by native speakers of English and Spanish. The parametric variation detected in the two languages is accounted for by an analysis based on the availability of inheritance of discourse features in the relevant language alongside the activation of an Edge Feature, triggering movement of the relevant discourse category.
Artículo Labile Verbs and Word Order in Early Middle English: an Initial Study(Universidad de Oviedo, 2012) García García, Luisa; Ruiz Narbona, Esaúl; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This paper serves as an initial exploration of the hypothesis put forth by García García (2012) according to which morphological syncretism in the expression of valency in causative pairs may have a connection with syntactic parameters, specifi cally the overt expression of all verbal arguments and a fi xed or consistent word order. In this paper we assess the relative position of subject-verb and verb-object in early Middle English transitive and intransitive clauses containing melten, (a)quenchen, and burnen and compare them with those with a transitive- and intransitive-only verb respectively. The most outstanding result shows that labile verbs used transitively seem to anticipate the VO order that will become generalized in later stages of English.
Artículo The Inflection of Latin Proper Names in the Old English Translation of Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica(MDPI, 2024) Ruiz Narbona, Esaúl; Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa); Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). EspañaThis paper discusses the inflections of Latin proper names in the Old English translation of Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica. Whereas most common Latin loans are integrated into the Old English system as far as inflections are concerned, proper names, like scientific loans, can retain Latin inflections in some contexts. The analysis of the more than 700 tokens in this text reveals that the prototypical paradigm of Latin proper names results from a mixture of Latin and Old English patterns. The choice of inflections seems to be chiefly conditioned by grammatical case. While the nominative and accusative are modeled after Latin with very few exceptions, the dative and genitive are influenced by Old English paradigms as well. Both Latin and Old English inflections are evenly distributed in the dative. However, marking on names seems to be secondary and determined primarily by additional morphosyntactic means such as determiners or prepositions. As for the genitive, the predominant inflection, thematic vowel plus -s, results from the fusion of the inflections in both languages grounded in phonetic or spelling similarities.
