Capítulo de Libro Dynamics of Radiation Effects in Silicon Studied with Pulsed Ion Beams and Ion Beam Induced Charge Collection(2024) García López, Francisco Javier; Jiménez Ramos, María del Carmen; García Osuna, Adrián; Rodríguez Ramos, Mauricio; Persaud, Arun; Ji, Qing; Schenkel, Thomas; Física Atómica, Molecular y Nuclear; Física Aplicada II; Department of Energy. United States; International Atomic Energy AgencyThe dynamics of structural defects created in semiconductor devices and detectors by ion irradiation present a multi-scale problem with characteristic times ranging from pico-seconds to seconds. The Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment (NDCX-II) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is an accelerator that delivers very intense and short-pulsed ion beams, allowing access to defect dynamics studies at the nanosecond time scale. Here, we used the Ion Beam Induced Charge (IBIC) technique to compare changes in the charge collection efficiency (CCE) of silicon diodes irradiated with 1 MeV He+ ions at dose rates that differ by 11 orders of magnitude. For high ion flux, up to ~ 4 × 1019 ions cm−2s−1, the NDCX-II accelerator was employed using single ion pulses of a few ns duration, while the low flux irradiations (~108 ions cm−2 s−1) were performed with the 3 MV Tandem accelerator of the CNA, using a nuclear microprobe. We observe a threshold ion flux of ~ 2 × 1019 ions cm−2 s−1 for the onset of increased damage accumulation for pulsed irradiations. The analysis of the diodes indicates an increase in the electron trapping probability for high flux ion pulses by a factor of 3 compared to conventional low flux irradiations. We observe that high flux ion pulses also partially anneal pre-damaged samples through intense local excitations and heating. Intense ion pulses provide access to the time domain in studies of radiation effects and enable new directions in defect engineering for applications in quantum information science.

Capítulo de Libro Characterization and applications of industrial wastes with highcontent of gypsum(Nova Science, 2011) Gázquez, M.J.; Bolívar Raya, Juan Pedro; Mantero, Juan; García-Tenorio García-Balmaseda, Rafael; Vaca, Francisco; Física Aplicada IIThe recycling of inorganic wastes generated by different industrial processes is a research field of high interest because the minimization of waste disposal, avoiding its potential release into the environment, can generate environmental and economical benefits for these industries and the general population. The appropriate treatment of industrial wastes could even lead to the generation of co-products of economic value and broad application. Obviously, the environmental and health impact of these co-products should comply with existing regulations. In this direction, the present study describes first the used raw materials ilmenite (ILM) and slag (SLAG) and a wasteknown as ―red gypsum‖ (RG) coming from a titanium dioxide industrial facility located at the province of Huelva (Spain), in terms of their elemental composition, radioactive contents, granulometry, mineralogy, microscopic morphology and physical composition. The main goal was to obtain basic information for future potential applications of the RG waste in construction, civil engineering, etc. One of these applications has been studied in the second part of our study: we have analysed the main properties of cements produced with different proportions of red gypsum, and their obtained improvements, in relation to Ordinary Portland Cements (OPC). In the produced RG cements, it has been also demonstrated that the levels of pollutants associated always remain within safety limits.
Capítulo de Libro Occupational, public and environmental radiological impact caused by the phosphoric acid industry: the case of Huelva (Spain)(Intech, 2017) Guerrero Márquez, José Luís; Mosqueda Peña, Fernando; Mantero, Juan; Manjón, Guillermo; García-Tenorio García-Balmaseda, Rafael; Bolívar, Juan Pedro; Física Aplicada IIThe production of phosphate fertilizers usually uses as raw material sedimentary phosphate rock, which contains enhanced concentrations from U‐series radionuclides about 10–100 times higher than unperturbed soils. This fact implies the need for evaluating the radiologi‐cal implications of this activity. In our case, the study has been performed in a large fertilizer industrial complex located at Huelva town (SW of Spain), where sedimentary phosphate rock has been processed since 1965 to 2010, generating annually an average of about 2.5 million tons of a by‐product called phosphogypsum (PG), which has been stored in big stacks 1 km away from Huelva city, covering 1000 ha. The fluxes of the radionuclides of interest along the production process and the effective doses received by the workers have been deter‐mined. In addition, the radioecological impact associated to the waste management strategy followed has been evaluated.
