Trabajo Fin de Grado A Comparative Analysis of The English Structure [There - Participle - Dp] and Spanish Passive With Se(2024) Pérez Galán, Marta; Jiménez Fernández, Ángel Luis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Trabajo Fin de Grado A contrastive study of the vowel systems: Received Pronunciation and Northern Irish English.(2025-05-28) Gómez Rosas, Lucía; Ruíz Narbona, Esaúl; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This work explores the vowel system of Northern Irish English (NIE), with a particular focus on the variety spoken in Derry. Despite the standard recognition in phonetic and phonological studies attributed to the Received Pronunciation (RP), this work points out the diversity of English accents within the UK. Thus, in order to achieve this goal, a description and classification of vowels have been done based on major works of experts in the field of phonetics. Once the framework of the work has been discussed, a deeper comparison of the RP and NIE vowel systems has been established. In addition, to illustrate all this data, the analysis of the NIE has been supported with real speech examples from the TV show Derry Girls, challenging the predominance of RP English and promoting the inclusion of other English accents.Trabajo Fin de Grado A Corpus Linguistic Study on Religio-Rethorical Discourse in the Speeches of J. F. Kennedy and Barack Obama(2023) Calderón Pereira, Carlos; López Soto, María Teresa; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)John F. Kennedy and Barack Obama used easy-to-understand words in their speeches with the only aim of reaching people. In this paper, I will start from the assertion that they had similar approaches to their commitment to society. I will do it using Corpus Linguistics, which studies language through examples of real texts. The frequencies of the different semantic categories present in both Corpora have been analyzed, within other analyses such as concordance plots and lexical neighborhoods with the use of AntConc. Once these objectives have been met, it has been found that the semantic category related to religion was not as high as expected at the beginning of the study and, therefore, social values were what really marked their speeches. This is shown in the semantic category related to feelings and social values. However, with the lexical neighborhoods and the concordance plots, I have observed how the feelings of nationalism and others such as hope were present every time they spoke.Trabajo Fin de Grado A Corpus Linguistic Study on The “American Dream” in the Works of F. Scott Fitzgerald and James Truslow(2023) Dios Moreno, Andrea de; López Soto, María Teresa; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)The idea of the American Dream has been depicted by many authors since James Truslow defined it in the 30’s. This study presents a comparison between how F. Scott Fitzgerald and James Truslow represent the American Dream using the Corpus Linguistics for the exact purpose of demonstrating the proposed hypothesis which states that Fitzgerald gives a more depicted version of the concept of the American Dream, while Truslow stays positive about the concept and presents America as a promised land. The study has demonstrated that Fitzgerald reflects the idea of a corrupted AD whereas Truslow depicted the concept in a positive and almost fanciful way through their use of the language and semantic categories. That is why the semantic category is social classes is more present in Fitzgerald’s works rather than, for example, words related to effort and hard work that are more often in Truslow’s works.Trabajo Fin de Grado A cultural bridge between East and West: the Beat reimagining of Japanese haiku as an American poetic form(2025-05-27) Gómez Mateos, Miguel; Toda Iglesias, María de los Ángeles; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Literatura Inglesa y Norteamericana)The dissertation explores the cross-cultural adaptation of the Japanese haiku within the context of the American Beat Generation, illustrating how a traditional Eastern poetic form was reimagined and turned into a different literary and philosophical setting. Tracing the origins from classical definitions by Bashō and Shiki to its popularization in the West by R.H. Blyth, the study first establishes the poetic and philosophical foundations of haiku, including some of its formal features (kigo, kireji, and syllabic structure). The analysis then shifts to examine how key figures of the Beat Generation—Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, ruth weiss, and Diane di Prima—engaged with haiku as a medium for poetic innovation and spiritual exploration. Through close readings of selected haikus, the dissertation highlights each poet’s distinctive approach. In doing so, this research challenges the notion that English-language haiku is a diluted imitation of its Japanese counterpart, arguing that Beat poets redefined haiku’s parameters, making it a resource for cultural blending, artistic experimentation, and personal revelation. Lastly, the dissertation demonstrates that the Beat Generation’s use of haiku served as both a literary and philosophical bridge between East and West, expanding the possibilities of poetic expression in the modern world.Trabajo Fin de Grado A Descriptive Study of the Spanish Dubbing of the Series Breaking Bad Focused on the Translation of Culturemes(2020) Fernández Rubio, Rocío; García González, José EnriqueTrabajo Fin de Grado A pragmatic analysis of the sitcom Atypical(2023) Borja Borrego, Lucía; Íñigo Mora, Isabel María; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Trabajo Fin de Grado A Reading of Blacksad as Graphic Novel in Terms of the Noir Tradition(2023) Racero Suárez, Juan; Gronow Smith, Miguel Juan; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Literatura Inglesa y Norteamericana)Trabajo Fin de Grado A Reading of Geoffrey Hill's "The Mystery of the Charity of Charles Pèguy"(2018) Maeso Morente, Ana Cristina; Gronow Smith, Miguel JuanTrabajo Fin de Grado A research on “vocal fry”(2024) Iglesias Lagares, Leandro; Cuenca Villarín, María Heliodora; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This study aims at examining the type of phonation known as “vocal fry”, how it is produced and who is more prone to using vocal fry in their daily speech. For this study, two tests were carried out; a production test, in which 10 participants were selected according to their variety of English, nationality, and sexuality, in order to see how these factors affect the use of vocal fry; and a perception test, in which samples from the production test were provided to 16 listeners as to give their views and opinions on each sample. The results of the study seem to suggest that vocal fry is more prone in female American English speakers, however, it also points to female British English speakers, and queer people, as they are also prone to making use of this type of phonation in a less severe way. Moreover, variables such as speech rate were also analyzed in this study to see if they are conditioning factors in the use of vocal fry. This study will tackle all these points and will shed light to this interesting type of phonation.Trabajo Fin de Grado A semantic case study of four paramount speeches in favour of women's rights for education(2023) Durán Barrios, Isabel María; Íñigo Mora, Isabel María; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Trabajo Fin de Grado An account of English there and its Spanish counterparts(2024) Uría Cuenca, Alena; Comesaña Rincón, Joaquín; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Within the field of Contrastive Analysis, there seems to be a void regarding the constructions of existential there. Either due to its particular nature which is hard to delineate, or to the lack of a visible pattern, usually articles concerning the translation of existential there only focus on the Spanish verb haber because of their similar meanings, but fail to mention other possibilities. Indeed, haber is rather limited in terms of being a viable translation for existential there due to its existential meaning, as there does not only appear with to be. As such, the purpose of this piece of research is to explore other possibilities, such as those of se sentences in Spanish and the verb existir, analysing their meanings and structures to study similarities and differences.Trabajo Fin de Grado Applying Webquests to Teaching English Morphology(2023) López Cabrera, Guillermo; Amores Carredano, José Gabriel De; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This work explores the application of WebQuests as a pedagogical strategy in teaching English morphology. It aims to investigate the potential benefits of WebQuests in enhancing students' understanding of morphological concepts. This work includes a comprehensive literature review on traditional approaches to morphology instruction and the role of WebQuests in language learning. It also presents the development of three WebQuests focusing on back formation, eponyms, and idioms. Additionally, practical recommendations for implementing WebQuests in university settings are provided, highlighting aspects such as the integration of technology in class. This thesis aims to contribute to this field by exploring the effectiveness of WebQuests in offering a deeper understanding and application of morphological concepts in the English language, and also by offering valuable points of view for language teachers and researchers.Trabajo Fin de Grado Una aproximación experimental a la voz pasiva en la clase de inglés(2024) Casas García, Ángela de las; Jiménez Fernández, Ángel Luis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Passive voice teaching stands out as a topic of great interest in education since, as will be demonstrated in this paper, it plays a fundamental role in the English language. Therefore, teachers and learners of English must acquire an understanding that will enable them to master the structure of the passive voice. However, the passive voice can pose particular challenges, as questions may arise about how to explain this grammatical structure effectively and how to present it to Spanish speaking learners of English so that they acquire this knowledge and practice obtaining favourable results. Creating a playful and participatory learning environment that coexists with real-world objects is essential for teaching this grammar point. Thus, this paper aims to provide a study of passive constructions focusing mainly on the content taught to A2 users on this grammatical point. Accordingly, it mentions the levels at which the passive voice should be taught and proposes various books that exemplify what is taught to learners at these levels. Moreover, it exposes the plurilingual approach and what teachers need to know to teach the passive voice effectively. Finally, a discussion of pedagogical approaches to ensure effective teaching of the grammatical construction under study will be undertaken, considering the advantages and disadvantages of gamification and methods that are more conventional.Trabajo Fin de Grado Bilingualism and L1 Attrition(2023) Toscano Rodríguez, Maravilla; Martín González, Javier; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This essay deals with the topic of lexical L1 attrition and how it can impact on bilingual individuals. The L1 of two adult Spanish women might be changed by frequent exposure to and influence from their L2 (English) due to their residence in Manchester. Despite the fact that both individuals reside in a monolingual area, phone calls and interactions with family members and peers in Spanish keep their L1 from being fully inactive. The results of a questionnaire and an interview to both of them shows that whereas Participant 1 feels more connected to her Spanish language and roots, Participant 2 seems more attached to her L2 and C2. Oral tasks, i.e Discourse Completion Task (DCT), Lexical Decision Task (LDT) are employed to conduct this study. The findings of these assessments show striking differences between these potential attriters and two monolingual control subjects. The particular focus is on lexical components in formal and informal contexts, and both participants were similarly impacted, despite some interesting differences between them.Trabajo Fin de Grado La Caracterización de personajes femeninos y temas feminista en Villette de Charlotte Brontë(2024) García Meléndez, Marta; Porcel García, María Isabel; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Nowadays, acquiring a second language has become an essential skill, just like other skills for personal and professional development. For this reason, more and more students are preparing for the B2 First Certificate level through private language schools. To achieve this, it is necessary to develop English language skills at B2 level. The official Cambridge exams serve as a reliable measure of language proficiency. The use of textbooks is a common practice in English language teaching. However, not all of them are effective. It is therefore hypothesised that using the appropriate textbook will help students improve their language skills and achieve effective preparation. In this study, a textbook for preparing students for the B2 official exam has been analysed and the results show that not all language skills are balanced, and students are not well prepared for the exam. This research will contribute to improving the quality of teaching and students’ learning in the future.Trabajo Fin de Grado Design of Innovative Educational Materials for English Teaching(2024) Franco Díaz, Paloma de la Concepción; López Soto, María Teresa; Universidad de Sevilla.
