Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This study aims at examining the type of phonation known as “vocal fry”, how it is produced and who is more prone to using vocal fry in their daily speech. For this study, two tests were carried out; a production test, in which 10 participants were selected according to their variety of English, nationality, and sexuality, in order to see how these factors affect the use of vocal fry; and a perception test, in which samples from the production test were provided to 16 listeners as to give their views and opinions on each sample. The results of the study seem to suggest that vocal fry is more prone in female American English speakers, however, it also points to female British English speakers, and queer people, as they are also prone to making use of this type of phonation in a less severe way. Moreover, variables such as speech rate were also analyzed in this study to see if they are conditioning factors in the use of vocal fry. This study will tackle all these points and will shed light to this interesting type of phonation.Trabajo Fin de Grado An account of English there and its Spanish counterparts(2024) Uría Cuenca, Alena; Comesaña Rincón, Joaquín; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Within the field of Contrastive Analysis, there seems to be a void regarding the constructions of existential there. Either due to its particular nature which is hard to delineate, or to the lack of a visible pattern, usually articles concerning the translation of existential there only focus on the Spanish verb haber because of their similar meanings, but fail to mention other possibilities. Indeed, haber is rather limited in terms of being a viable translation for existential there due to its existential meaning, as there does not only appear with to be. As such, the purpose of this piece of research is to explore other possibilities, such as those of se sentences in Spanish and the verb existir, analysing their meanings and structures to study similarities and differences.Trabajo Fin de Grado Applying Webquests to Teaching English Morphology(2023) López Cabrera, Guillermo; Amores Carredano, José Gabriel De; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This work explores the application of WebQuests as a pedagogical strategy in teaching English morphology. It aims to investigate the potential benefits of WebQuests in enhancing students' understanding of morphological concepts. This work includes a comprehensive literature review on traditional approaches to morphology instruction and the role of WebQuests in language learning. It also presents the development of three WebQuests focusing on back formation, eponyms, and idioms. Additionally, practical recommendations for implementing WebQuests in university settings are provided, highlighting aspects such as the integration of technology in class. This thesis aims to contribute to this field by exploring the effectiveness of WebQuests in offering a deeper understanding and application of morphological concepts in the English language, and also by offering valuable points of view for language teachers and researchers.Trabajo Fin de Grado Una aproximación experimental a la voz pasiva en la clase de inglés(2024) Casas García, Ángela de las; Jiménez Fernández, Ángel Luis; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)Passive voice teaching stands out as a topic of great interest in education since, as will be demonstrated in this paper, it plays a fundamental role in the English language. Therefore, teachers and learners of English must acquire an understanding that will enable them to master the structure of the passive voice. However, the passive voice can pose particular challenges, as questions may arise about how to explain this grammatical structure effectively and how to present it to Spanish speaking learners of English so that they acquire this knowledge and practice obtaining favourable results. Creating a playful and participatory learning environment that coexists with real-world objects is essential for teaching this grammar point. Thus, this paper aims to provide a study of passive constructions focusing mainly on the content taught to A2 users on this grammatical point. Accordingly, it mentions the levels at which the passive voice should be taught and proposes various books that exemplify what is taught to learners at these levels. Moreover, it exposes the plurilingual approach and what teachers need to know to teach the passive voice effectively. Finally, a discussion of pedagogical approaches to ensure effective teaching of the grammatical construction under study will be undertaken, considering the advantages and disadvantages of gamification and methods that are more conventional.Trabajo Fin de Grado La Caracterización de personajes femeninos y temas feminista en Villette de Charlotte Brontë(2024) García Meléndez, Marta; Porcel García, María Isabel; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Literatura Inglesa y Norteamericana)Trabajo Fin de Grado Design of Innovative Educational Materials for English Teaching(2024) Franco Díaz, Paloma de la Concepción; López Soto, María Teresa; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)The use of more participative and didactic methodologies is proposed in this final degree project. A didactic proposal has been created that takes advantage of gamification and Task-Based Learning resources, in order to encourage students to be more satisfied when learning foreign languages. Activities based on the Task-Based Learning methodology have been proposed as gamified, related to the environment and sustainability, also to make students aware of the importance of it.Trabajo Fin de Grado Exploring English through Short Films: Bridging cultures in Year 12 (Junior)(2024) Pastrana Tamayo, Minerva; López Soto, María Teresa; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)When learning a language, in this case, English, it is essential to address the four main skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing, together. These skills are interrelated and their study together, following this same order, reflects the natural process we go through when acquiring our mother tongue. Based on the “Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)”, the “Dogme teaching unplugged approach” and the “Silent Way” method, we have designed a didactic unit that seeks not only to help students improve the four language skills, but also to turn these activities into a habit in their daily lives, and to promote their personal development in order to contribute positively to the world. The choice of film as a medium for teaching English is due to its ability to attract students’ attention and motivate them to learn a new language. In addition, through these short films in British and American English, we aim to foster an understanding of both cultures. Games also play an important role in this project, as they provide a playful learning environment, where students can learn unconsciously and indirectly, which can be translated as more effective learning than in a conventional theoretical class.Trabajo Fin de Grado Exploring the evolution of Language Teaching Methodologies and Contemporary Eclecticism(2024) Torres Cuevas, Paula; Sánchez Torres, Jorge; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This Final Degree Project presents a comprehensive overview of the most prominent language teaching methods and approaches that have risen in popularity across the last century until the present time. This is presented together with their respective benefits as well as their flaws with the purpose of raising awareness about their everlasting contributions to contemporary language instruction. Additionally, a Likert-scale questionnaire study is conducted among thirty-one young Spanish children who are in the process of learning English as a foreign language in order to discover their preferred ways to learn the target language in the classroom. These procedures are directly connected with the previously discussed methods and approaches and will help determine if there is a widely favored one. Through the bibliographic research and study conducted by this researcher, it is hoped that contemporary language instructors acquire critical information that will aid design their instruction style.Trabajo Fin de Grado From Manuscript to Print Culture: a Study of Thomas Wyatt's Sonnets(2016) Jiménez Beato, Marta; Mora, María JoséTrabajo Fin de Grado I was wrong, Ma. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Literatura Inglesa y Norteamericana)Trabajo Fin de Grado Intuitive-Imitative and Analytic-Linguistic approaches effects on the production of Voice Onset Time (VOT) by Spanish learners of English(2024) Benítez García, Antonia; Cuenca Villarín, María Heliodora; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Lengua Inglesa)This research aims to investigate the effects that explicit instruction on pronunciation through two approaches, namely intuitive-imitative and analytic linguistic, have on the production of voice onset time (VOT) by Spanish learners of English. The data was collected from 15 elementary-intermediate Spanish learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) pertaining to a private language school in Lebrija, Seville, while receiving regular courses of English at school. The 15 students were divided into three five-member groups. Two of them received a teaching session on pronunciation, and the remaining one served as a control group. VOT data was elicited under a sentence-reading task both in a pre- and post-test. Results show that the participants from the analytic-linguistic group who had received explicit instruction produced the voiceless stops /p, t, k/ with more English-like values than those from the other two groups. This could imply that short-term but intensive pronunciation instruction through the display of the phonetic alphabet, place, and manner of articulation affects their VOT values towards more target-like ones.Trabajo Fin de Grado Masculinities in Crime Fiction: An Analysis of S. A. Cosby's Razorblade Tears(2024) Milans Ortega, Pedro José; Cobo Piñero, Rocío; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Filología Inglesa (Literatura Inglesa y Norteamericana)Trabajo Fin de Grado On the phenomenon of have-cliticization and its acquisition.(2021) López Álvarez, Lidia; Jiménez Fernández, Ángel LuisThis paper is concerned with the acquisition of the linguistic phenomenon of have-cliticization by Spanish speakers, for whom English is their second language (ESL speakers). This phenomenon constitutes a poverty-of-stimulus situation (POS), since acquisition occurs despite the insufficient linguistic data available to native and ESL speakers. In order to collect data about the acquisition of the phenomenon by ELS speakers, a survey consisting of utterances containing the relevant structures was prepared, and a grammaticality judgment was elicited from both native speakers of English (as a control group) and ESL speakers. The data collected are examined in order to determine if acquisition of the feature occurs, and if so, to detect the precise stage of the learning process. Then, I try to explain the results on the basis of a syntactic and prosodic analysis. By looking at both the syntactic and phonological-prosodic analyses of the relevant utterances, I attempt to ascertain what the constraints for have-cliticization are, and in doing so, I aim at determining what information UG must provide in order to facilitate the acquisition of this linguistic phenomenon.Trabajo Fin de Grado "Purest Meat": Deconstructing Gay Discourse in Allen Ginsberg´s Early Works(2020) García Cortés, Rosario; Gronow Smith, Miguel JuanTrabajo Fin de Grado Sex and the City: And Just Like That...
