HUM 659: Argumentación y Persuasión en LingüísticaThis work focuses on the relation established between argumentation and (im)politenessin discourse. My purpose is to demonstrate that the argumentative structure can operate as a resource to serve as regulator of the speakers’ face as well as, at another level, a resource which reinforces (im)polite activity. Previous studies have showed the persuasive function of (im)politeness, and for this reason the (im)polite acthas been considered as a resource “in the service of” argument . In this paper, I aim to show that the relation between argumentation and (im)politenessis not unidirectional. This means in turn that, in some types of discourse the argumentative structure can be used for producing (im)politeness, regardless of the persuasive goal that, in my opinion, is present in any kind of discourse to a higher or lesser degree. In this way I propose a bi-functional relation between argumentation and (im)politeness. For proving this proposal, persuasive texts, mainly advertising and political texts, are used.
