Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)Among other things, the Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services published by the IPBES platform in 2019 concluded thatthe speed with which global nature has changed over the last 50 years is unprecedented in the history of humanity. In this context of accelerating change and the current climate emergency, there is a need to press forward in the establishment of theoretical and methodological bases that enable an understanding of the mechanisms by which it operates and its impacts on different time and geographic scales, while considering the specificity of different territories and habitats. To advance knowledge on this worldwide environmental emergency and the instruments to assess and mitigate it, the monograph put out a call for theoretical-methodological studies and for analyses of practical cases that would take into account the multiscale nature and territorial diversity of environmental processes and the policies designed to address them, taking as a starting point interpretive frameworks of global change and social metabolism. In line with this objective, this article analyzes, connects, and contextualizes in the international literature how each of the contributions included in the monograph contributes to the current start of play based on three topics for reflection: (i) Interpretive frameworks and multiscale assessment tools of global change; (ii) The prospect of ecological and climate degradation in Latin America and the Caribbean, and (iii) The analysis of public policies and other options in a territorial focus. Their joint consideration reveals the utility of creating theoretical-methodological frameworks of common understanding adapted to the diversity of different territories and scales. Similarly, the utility of public policies founded on the ecological economy and strengthened by the new forms of territorial governance characterized by the inclusion of participation and the fomenting of multilevel, multiscale, and sectoral coordination and cooperation is also identified. Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)This paper explores how geography shapes human uses of the maritime space along the Atlantic archipelagic territories of Macaronesia, a biogeographical region that includes the archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira, Selvagens, Canary Islands and Cape Verde. The way specific geographic characteristics of these islands influence and even determine maritime uses and activities is analyzed in a three-layers ap proach in the following order: socio economic analysis, sectorial analysis and uses and activities analysis. The biophysical and geographical characteristics of each archipelago will be considered throughout the analysis, highlighting the common aspects and peculiarities between each region. After a comprehensive overview of the main economic activities, the discussion suggests that certain specificities need to be taken into account in maritime spatial planning processes when planning and managing human uses at sea, to promote the sustainable development of local communities, particularly in archipelagic regions.Artículo Nature-Based Solutions to Hydro-Climatic Risks: Barriers and Triggers for Their Implementation in Seville (Spain)(MDPI, 2022) Lara García, Ángela; Moral Ituarte, Leandro del; Universidad de Sevilla. Departamento de Geografía Humana; Agencia Estatal de Investigación. España; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España; European Commission (EC). Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)Nature-based solutions (NbS) are currently a priority of international institutions (UN and EU) to improve urban resilience to hydro-climatic risks. However, responsible institutions, such as river basin authorities and local governments, while still prioritizing gray infrastructure, often present resistance to these strategies. This paper analyzes this issue in the case of Seville (Spain). We identify historical and recent institutional practices related to the development of gray infrastructure and the experience of citizens’ movements that demand the implementation of green infrastructure and the naturalization of urban space. Based on the theoretical framework of the sustainability transition, the article contributes to the identification of the factors that hinder or trigger the processes of change, drawing from the results of a case with a long tradition in hydro-climatic disaster management. The research has included an in-depth review of risk planning in the city of Seville, semi-structured interviews with 24 social and institutional actors, and participant observation of both urban planning processes and the practices of citizen movements. Our results show that the generation of shared visions clashes, first with conflicting perceptions of the city’s strengths and weaknesses regarding risks; second, with contradictions between institutional discourses and practices, and finally, with the operational limitations of public participation processes.
