Proposal for an indicators system of urban integration of the maritime ports heritage

Abstract

This article, which is part of a larger research project, aims to contribute to the development of tools to measure the level of urban integration of port heritage in maritime cities. The indicators have been proposed on the basis of the concept of integration defined during the work, whose initial hypothesis underscores the importance of maintaining port activities in balance with more urban uses for the sustainability of the economic development of cities, in line with the notion of urban historical landscape. According to this tool of urban management, the concept of port heritage is redefined in this work and transcends its historical character to be incorporated in the urban heritage, preserving its functionality and its link with the port. During the development of the work, the principle of integration has been narrowed from a strictly urbanistic approach, which has dealt with the aspects of urban geography and territory, spatial relations and mobility and functional relations of the port and city. These three dimensions, which make up the proposed integration model, have been defined through measurable variables, which group the resulting indicators that best express the phenomenon of urban integration of the port in maritime cities.

Este artículo, perteneciente a un trabajo de investigación en desarrollo más amplio, tiene por objeto contribuir a la elaboración de herramientas de medición del nivel de integración urbana del patrimonio portuario en ciudades marítimas.Los indicadores se han propuesto en base al concepto de integración definido durante el trabajo, cuya hipótesis de partida subraya la importancia del mantenimiento de las actividades del puerto en equilibrio con los usos más urbanos para la sostenibilidad del desarrollo económico de las ciudades, en consonancia con la noción de paisaje histórico urbano. Conforme a esta herramienta de gestión urbana, el concepto de patrimonio portuario se redefine en este trabajo y trasciende de su carácter histórico para ser incorporado en el patrimonio urbano conservando su funcionalidad y su vinculación con el puerto. Durante el desarrollo del trabajo se ha acotado el principio de integración desde un enfoque estrictamente urbanístico, con el que se han abordado los aspectos de la geografía urbana y del territorio, de las relaciones espaciales y la movilidad y de las relaciones funcionales del puerto y la ciudad. Estas tres dimensiones, que conforman el modelo de integración propuesto se han definido mediante variables medibles, en las que se agrupan los indicadores resultantes que mejor expresan el fenómeno de la integración urbana del puerto en ciudades marítimas.
