The ornate in the architecture of Tenerife and Gran Canaria: 1865-1935

Abstract

This document is part of an ongoing doctoral thesis on the ornamentation of the façades of the Canary Islands. It is studied the decoration that presents the architectural exterior of the buildings, mainly in the island of Tenerife and of complementary form in the island of Gran Canaria, between the years 1865 and 1935. The decorative motifs are animals, humans and vegetables, although the latter are the most abundant, being vital to identify the languages that use them within the aforementioned chronology. Also included in this work are geometric motifs that stand out for some cause, such as their singularity or because they are repeated in different buildings and therefore may have some interest. The elements that complement this decoration are also under study, such as chapiter, balusters, ironworks etc. This work combines written research, either through the bibliography or the consultation of the license files of construction of historical archives, with the field work, which involves the direct taking of photographic data directly from the facades to your study. Subsequently, a registry is created to help protect this decoration and, based on it, to carry out the subsequent study that allows achieving objectives, such as comparisons with the decorations of other places.

El presente documento forma parte de una tesis doctoral en curso sobre el ornato de las fachadas de las Islas Canarias. Se estudia la decoración que presenta el exterior arquitectónico de los inmuebles, principalmente en la isla de Tenerife y de forma complementaria en la isla de Gran Canaria, entre los años 1865 y 1935. Los motivos decorativos que se trabajan son los animales, los humanos y los vegetales, aunque son estos últimos los más abundantes, siendo de vital importancia identificar los lenguajes que los utilizan dentro de la cronología mencionada. También se incluyen en este trabajo ciertos motivos geométricos que destacan por alguna causa, como puede ser por su singularidad o porque se repiten en distintos inmuebles y por tanto puedan poseer cierto interés. Los elementos que complementan a esta decoración también son objeto de estudio, tales como capiteles, balaustres, herrajes etc. En este trabajo se combina la investigación escrita, bien sea a través de la bibliografía o la consulta de los expedientes de licencia de construcción de los archivos históricos, con el trabajo de campo, que supone la toma directa de datos fotográficos directamente de las fachadas para su estudio. Posteriormente se elabora un registro que contribuya a proteger esta decoración y en base a él, realizar el posterior estudio que permita conseguir objetivos, como realizar comparaciones con los ornatos de otros lugares.
