dc.description.abstract | Topicalizing expressions in Romance languages are not inherited from the mother
tongue, but have developed in Romance. This makes them particularly interesting as examples of
the origin and development of units which fall on the borderline between grammar and discourse. This study examines the history of respecto ‘concerning’ as a topicalizer in Spanish. In § 1 the
present-day use of this form is described. § 2 deals with the development of respecto in Romance
languages, as a descendant of Latin respectus, and also examines its uses in Neo Latin, which
are key to understanding the complexity of the formation of respecto in Romance languages. §
3 provides the chronology of the changes undergone by this form until it became a topicalizing
expression at a late stage; while § 4 includes some notes relating to the complex variety of forms
used as topicalizers from medieval Spanish to the present day. | es |
