This paper focus on the analysis and comparative study of two quality agro-food labelling initiatives and their contribution to territorial development. The first case is the attempt to establish a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) for the cured sheep cheese in Sierra de Grazalema (Spain). The second case is the creation of a Collective Brand (CB) for lamb meat on the Texel Island (The Netherlands). The research was done from 2009 to 2011. The data collected during fieldwork show that quality ago-food labels work at two different levels. Firstly, they can support the creation of added value for the product, and to stabilize the supply chain that they regulate. Secondly, this initiative may enhance the cohesion and synergy between the actors of the territory, even when they fail in a formal level. We also found that the failure in this kind of initiatives is due to their complexity and the high transaction costs that they entail.
