dc.description.abstract | Resumen:
dc.description.abstract | The water management of golf courses demands irrigation strategies in order to
face periods of natural drought or voluntarily reduce water consumption during the year
due to a shortage of supply, economic or environmental interest. This paper evaluates
the response to the lack of water, and subsequent recovery, of a species such as Cynodon dactylon and a hybrid, such as Cynodon dactylon x Cynodon traanvalensis,
which form grass and are established in the fairways of most golf courses in Andalusia.
To check the response of these lawns, during and after the lack of irrigation, two
independent studies have been carried out.
A first study was performed in a golf course, where a management model was
applied, similar to the one proposed in this work, and the response of Cynodon dactylon
var. Riviera, during a period of drought in summer, about 75 days, and during recovery
to drought. The results have shown the resistance to lack of water and the resilience of
Cynodon dactylon, as well as the feasibility of applying an induced drought on the golf
course, during a period of low use and high ET. Hence, an adequate quality of the grass
was restored before the beginning of the greater use of the facilities. Thus it has also
been proven that an induced drought affected the proliferation of weeds. The results
have been published in the Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering.
In a second study, the behavior of the Tifway [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. ×
Cynodon transvaalensis Burtt Davy] bermudagrass hybrid was evaluated, under
unfavorable conditions, on sandy and shallow soil, during the recovery of four dry
periods of different duration (3, 5, 8 and 10 weeks). The grass also underwent other
limiting factors, in addition to drought, such as deficit irrigation prior to the period
without irrigation, the reduced depth of the rooting layer, the type of soil or the amount
of fertilizer applied.
In the first study, the fraction of green cover and the main attributes that
determine the quality of the turf were evaluated during two drought / recovery cycles,
carried out during the months of greatest water demand, and adjusted to a proposed
management model, contrasting the feasibility of applying the so-called Seasonal
Quality System (SCE), which proposes the application of an induced drought in periods
of minimum use and increased water demand. Likewise, the results obtained in this
work can be used in the management of periods of natural droughts or in environmental
programs, where the voluntary restriction of irrigation is included, knowing the
behavior of the lawn, especially in the recovery, in order to manage the operation of sports activity after drought. This water management strategy was effective for the
control of weeds, especially Digitaria spp, and shows the way for other investigations to
be initiated in order to control certain annual summer weeds after the emergency.
In the second study, it was shown that the duration of the drought is decisive for
the resilience of bermudagrass Tifway. The summer drought periods of more than
weeks without water did not allow reaching at least 50% of the green cover. The depth
and type of soil proved to be limiting factors of the drought recovery capacity of
Bermudagrass Tifway, as can be seen in the comparison with other data found in the
literature for the same species / cultivar. The data collected through alternative
methodologies to monitor lawn performance (green cover and visual quality), such as
Digital Image Analysis or the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, were very
similar to those obtained by traditional observation methods, reducing working hours. | |
