Conjeturas acerca de la caverna como arquitectura

Abstract

La carencia de una nomenclatura idónea para denominar las cavidades de la arquitectura, de palabras suficientes para definir sin equívocos cada uno de sus senos y de sus penetraciones, sus diversas oquedades, los diferentes tipos de orificios que la horadan en todas direcciones, el conjunto de sus aberturas y sus hendiduras, las heterogéneas habitaciones en las que se cumple y los múltiples vacíos que la ahuecan y la nacen habitable, condiciona y limita la posibilidad de distinguir, siquiera nominalmente, una gruta de una cueva, y una cueva de una caverna. Este déficit de términos precisos no justica, sin embargo, que en el diccionario general de la arquitectura no aparezcan ni el sustantivo cueva ni el nombre común caverna: ni que la teoría arquitectónica no las haya consi- derado asuntos de su competencia, ni que los glosarios de los usos y de las formas de cobijo no las hayan incluido en su nómina. A pesar de tanta ausencia y de tan excesiva pérdida, entre el académico que proyectó la Atlántida como arquitectura concéntrica y quien propuso excavar una montaña para venerar en la Basílica de Sainte Baume a María Magdalena hay un sendero, un hilo conductor, una similar inquietud por lo subterráneo y por lo venéreo: quizá un túnel secreto por el que también transitaron Frank Kafka, José Saramago y Ernesto Sábato, o alguna de sus criaturas: tura de turas.

The lack of an appropriate naming convention to refer to the architecture cavities, of enough words to define unequivocally each one of the various cavities, the different types of holes that pierce it in all directions, the combination of its openings and fissures, the heterogeneous rooms in which it ends and the multiple spaces that hollow it out and make it inhabitable determines and limits the possibility of distinguishing, nominally at least, a grotto from a cave and a cave from a cavern. This shortage of specific terms, however, does not justify the absence of the nouns “cave” and “cavern” in the general architecture dictionary, or that the architectural theory has not considered them an area to be within its scope, or that the glossaries of the different types of shelter have not included them in their list. In spite of this absence and of such a significant loss, between the academician who projected Atlantis as concentric architecture and whoever proposed to dig out a mountain to worship Mary Magdalene in the Sainte-Baume cave there is a trail, a common theme, a similar curiosity for the underground and the venereal world: maybe a secret tunnel through which Frank Kafka, José Saramago and Ernesto Sábato, or some of their creatures, also travelled: tura de turas.
