Automóvil, arquitectura y forma urbana en Estados Unidos: el caso del Sunbelt

Abstract

Este artículo aborda las relaciones existentes entre automóvil, arquitectura y forma urbana en Estados Unidos. A modo de introducción, comienza exponiendo la importancia social y económica del sector del automóvil, así como de las infraestructuras viarias asociadas al mismo, indagando en las raíces históricas de todo ello. Posteriormente, en un primer apartado, analiza las dos fases que caracterizan a la arquitectura del automóvil, defendiendo que tras la primera, la de la “arquitectura drive-in” de las décadas de 1950 a 1970, subyace una interesante componente cultural-identitaria, así como un impulso muy innovador desde el punto de vista tipológico. Todo ello desaparece en la segunda fase, la de la arquitectura de las “big boxes”, que comenzó a expandirse en la década de 1990. Resultaron del emprobrecimiento perceptivo al que se ven sometido los conductores cuando circulan por la ciudad y el territorio. En un segundo apartado, el artículo se centra en el análisis del vínculo automóvil-forma urbana, utilizando las ciudades del Sunbelt como caso de estudio. Se defiende que el derivado de dicho vínculo son unas “ciudades-esquema” que siguen la lógica de la ingeniería de transportes y que condicionan radicalmente la forma de vida de las personas, condenando a muchas ellas a la exclusión social.

This article studies the links existing between the automobile, the architecture and the urban form in the United States. In the introduction explains the social and economic importance of this sector, as well as the road infrastructures associated to it, analyzing the historic records of all this. Afterwards, in a first section, the article studies the two phases that characterize the car architecture. The first is the one of the ‘drive-in architecture’, developed between 1950 and 1970, an architecture with interesting cultural and identity values, as well as very innovative from the typological point of view. All this disappeared in a second phase, the one of the ‘big boxes’, that started in the 1990s. They were the result of the perceptive impoverishment of the drivers when they circulate across the city and the territory. In a second section, the article focus on the link automobile-urban form, using the Sunbelt cities as case study. According to the author, the by-product of this link are ‘scheme-cities’ that follow the logic of the transportation engineering, and that severely condition the way of life of the people, condemning many of them to social exclusion
