dc.description.abstract | This master's thesis has been carried out with three main objectives: a) to gather the maximum
possible amount of information about the accident of Palomares in only one document
as well as about the radiological and radioecological researches conducted on this topic and,
on the other hand, to contribute to these researches by making two experiments in the laboratory:
b) one simulating the possible incorporation processes of plutonium into the human
body by the inhalation of resuspended material in the contaminated zone, and c) the other
studying the possible dissolution and potential mobility of the Pu, present in the contaminated
soils, in an acidic medium to evaluate its potential entrance through this route in the
trophic chain.
Therefore, this report begins with the presentation of the accident's historical evolution and
the repercussions it has had on the soils, the marine habitats and the fauna and
ora of the
area. And afterwards the studies carried out in order to analyze the radiological situation of
the inhabitants are described. These inhabitants are more likely to incorporate the residuary
contamination, caused by the accident, into their organism via inhalation. Thus, we consider
interesting to carry out an in vitro lung simulation of the plutonium inhalation originating
from soils of Palomares. Also, but with less probability, the incorporation can be produced
through the trophic chain, being for this reason interesting to evaluate the potential mobility
of the Pu present in the contaminated soils and its availability by plants and vegetables.
In order to produce the results of the aforesaid simulations we've turned to the application of
radiochemistry processes, which are described in detail throughout this report, and the use
of several measurement techniques, which are also explained.
Thanks to the data obtained it has been veri ed that indeed a small percentage of plutonium
may be absorbed if it is inhaled from a contaminated resuspended soil caused by the accident
of Palomares. And it has been observed that under the action of acidic solutions a fraction
of the Pu present in the contaminated soils is dissolved and consequently is in available form
for plants and vegetables. These results, on the other hand, have been compared with the
ones obtained in similar studies carried out by other research groups.
Last but not least, the conclusions, just like the bibliography used in this report, are set forth. | es |
