Papel del farmacéutico en el uso racional de antibióticos

Abstract

Los antibióticos son sustancias producidas por microorganismos que tienen la capacidad de inhibir su crecimiento bacteriano o causar su muerte. Actualmente, el uso a demanda de antibióticos ha causado el desarrollo apresurado de mutaciones en los microorganismos provocando resistencias bacterianas, lo cual es un problema mundial de Salud que aqueja tanto a países desarrollados como en vías de desarrollo. De este modo, se ha estimado que para el año 2050, la tasa anual de muertes por infecciones a causa de bacterias multiresistentes será de 10 millones. La reducción de la resistencia bacteriana puede alcanzarse a través de la mejora del uso de antibióticos en la comunidad, para lo cual es importante y necesario incluir en las acciones o estrategias, el papel del farmacéutico. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo es recopilar las acciones y estrategias a nivel nacional que los farmacéuticos están realizando con objeto de disminuir dicha resistencia bacteriana. En España, ya se han puesto en marcha algunas de las iniciativas para el uso correcto y racional de antibióticos en las que incluyen la contribución del farmacéutico comunitario a través de su participación en campañas sanitarias y de educación para la Salud a la población, formación del farmacéutico en aspectos y guías clínicas de prescripción, uso y dispensación de antimicrobianos, investigación básica y asistencial sobre antibióticos desde la farmacia comunitaria y charlas impartidas a centros educativos por parte de los Colegios Oficiales de Farmacéuticos. El farmacéutico como profesional sanitario y al estar en contacto cercano con los pacientes, a quien tienen confianza y acuden frecuentemente al presentar algún problema de salud, cumple un papel importante en la concientización del uso racional de antibióticos, para lo cual brinda una atención farmacéutica, aconseja y sobre todo realiza una dispensación informada ayudando a que los pacientes tengan una mayor adherencia terapéutica, reduciendo de esta manera la aparición de resistencias bacterianas.

Antibiotics are substances produced by microorganisms that have the ability to inhibit bacterial growth or cause their death. Currently, the use of antibiotics on demand has caused the rapid development of mutations in microorganisms causing bacterial resistance, which is a global health problem that afflicts both developed and developing countries. Thus, it has been estimated that by 2050, the annual rate of deaths from infections due to multi-resistant bacteria will be 10 million. The reduction of bacterial resistance can be achieved through the improvement of the use of antibiotics in the community, for which it is important and necessary to include in the actions or strategies, the role of the pharmacists. For this reason, the objective of the present work was to recopilate the actions that pharmacists are doing to reduce said bacterial resistance at national level. In Spain, some of the initiatives for the correct and rational use of antibiotics have already been launched, including the contribution of the community pharmacist, such as participation in health campaigns and health education for the population, training of the pharmacists in aspects and clinical guidelines of prescription, use and dispensing of antimicrobials, basic and care research on antibiotics from the community pharmacies and lectures given to educational centers by the Official Associations of Pharmacists. The pharmacist as a health professional and being in close contact with patients, whom they trust and frequently come to when presenting a health problem, plays an important role in raising awareness of the rational use of antibiotics, for which it provides pharmaceutical care, advises and above all performs an informed dispensation helping patients to have a greater therapeutic adherence, thus reducing the appearance of bacterial resistance.
