Laboratorios farmacéuticos sevillanos del siglo xx: Otto Engelhardt y Sanavida

Abstract

A principios del siglo XIX, en el ámbito farmacéutico predomina el modelo absolutista, el cual va extinguiéndose y se va produciendo la transición con la Junta Superior Gubernativa de Farmacia como protagonista. A finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, se empezaron a crear los laboratorios anejos a las farmacias, precursores de la verdadera industria farmacéutica. Estaban llegando muchos medicamentos extranjeros a España y la incipiente industria nacional, en forma de laboratorios anejos intentó hacerle frente. Vamos a hablar de los principales laboratorios farmacéuticos del siglo XX, hemos empezado estudiando los principales laboratorios anejos cacereños y pacenses, para seguir con los onubenses y terminar con los de Sevilla. Por último, una gran parte del grueso del trabajo lo ocupa la vida de Otto Engelhardt, un personaje muy relevante en la vida de la capital hispalense de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Otto Engelhardt, ingeniero de profesión, creó el Laboratorio Sanavida, un laboratorio farmacéutico situado en San Juan de Aznalfarache, Sevilla. Centrándonos en el Laboratorio Sanavida y, tras explicar el resto, se aporta una explicación al devenir general de la industria farmacéutica en el suroeste de España.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the absolutist model predominated in the pharmaceutical field, which is becoming extinct and the transition with the Junta Superior Gubernativa de Farmacia takes place as the protagonist. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, laboratories annexed to pharmacies, precursors of the true pharmaceutical industry, began to be created. Many foreign medicines were arriving in Spain and the incipient national industry, in the form of attached laboratories tried to cope with it. We are going to talk about the main pharmaceutical laboratories of the twentieth century, we have started studying the main annexed laboratories of Cáceres and Badajoz, to continue with the one from Huelva and finish with those in Seville. Finally, a large part of the bulk of the work is occupied by the life of Otto Engelhardt, a very relevant character in the life of Seville of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Otto Engelhardt created the Sanavida Laboratory, a pharmaceutical laboratory located in San Juan de Aznalfarache, Seville. Focusing on the Sanavida Laboratory and, after explaining the other part, an explanation is given to the general memory of the pharmaceutical industry in the southwest of Spain.
