Compañías militares de ángeles en la cultura visual hispánica durante la Edad Moderna

Abstract

En este texto se explora la evolución, circulación y significación de la iconografía de los llamados “ángeles arcabuceros”, acuñación que proponemos sustituir por la de compañías militares de ángeles, al ajustarse mejor esta última a la realidad de las series pictóricas donde tales figuras son representadas. Sin obviar, por tanto, esta interrelación; nos centramos en el estilema del ángel con arma de fuego, aislándolo de otras muy diversas tipologías angélicas que la historiografía del arte ha tendido a englobar de forma conjunta. La revisión del caudal historiográfico subraya la heterogeneidad de interpretaciones, algunas contradictorias, que intentamos esclarecer y resituar mediante el análisis de los elementos iconográficos. Por otra parte, el análisis de documentos inéditos y crónicas sobre la procesión del Santo Entierro en Sevilla con ángeles portando armas de fuego desde el s. XVII, cambia el sentido de precedentes y modelos en la relación península-Andes hasta ahora. Con ello se demuestra la expansión de redes visuales compartidas a ambos lados del Atlántico, y se incide sobre la tesis de la retroalimentación fiesta-pintura como clave para entender esta iconografía que aún sigue planteando muchas incógnitas.

This essay explores the development, circulation, and meaning of the iconography of the so-called “harquebusier angels,” a designation I propose to substitute with that of “military companies of angels” which corresponds more accurately to the nature of the pictorial series in which these figures are usually represented. Particular attention is paid to the image of the angel with a firearm, isolating it from other angelic typologies that art history has tended to lump together. An analysis of the historiography reveals the extent to which different, and sometimes incompatible interpretations of these angels continue to circulate. I attempt to bring some clarity to these issues in order to reconfigure the study of these paintings through a careful analysis of their various iconographic elements. In addition, unpublished documents and chronicles are presented here concerning the procession of the Santo Entierro in Seville in the seventeenth century in which angels with firearms appear. These sources change the current state of knowledge about precedents and models for the harquebusier angel paintings and the overall sense of the relationship between the Iberian Peninsula and the Andes. In this way, this essay connects with studies looking at networks and connections between both sides of the Atlantic; it also stresses the interrelationship between religious performances and paintings as a key avenue for further understanding this still problematic iconography.
