The architecture of power. The island institution and autonomous bodies. Analysis of the cases: Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Madeira

Abstract

The architecture of power is a milestone for the cities, being most times a reference in the urban landscape. This research work is titled: “the Architecture of Power. The Island Institutions and Autonomous Bodies. Analysis of the Cases: Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Madeira”. Its main objective is studying and analysing in a comparative manner the architectural works. As primary objective, it intends to interpret and study the similarities of the architectural works built in the Canary Islands and Madeira to house the presidential and administration offices of the local and regional authorities. The expression of power through their buildings is clear. The architectural language used, the use of visual references such as coats of arms or emblems and the establishment of a clock tower that marks the life of the city and serves as a reference, tell us the interest of these bodies in lasting through history with these works.

La arquitectura del poder marca un hito en las ciudades, siendo muchas veces eje referencial en los entornos urbanísticos. Este trabajo de investigación se titula: “La arquitectura del poder. Las instituciones insulares y organismos autónomos. Análisis de los casos: Gran Canaria, Tenerife y Madeira.” Su objetivo principal es estudiar y analizar comparativamente las obras arquitectónicas. Como objetivo primordial pretende interpretar y estudiar las semejanzas de las obras arquitectónicas que se realizaron en Canarias y Madeira para acoger las sedes de presidenciales y de la administración de los poderes locales y regionales. La expresión del poder a través de sus edificios es clara, siendo los lenguajes arquitectónicos utilizados, el uso de referencias visuales como escudos o emblemas y el establecimiento de una torre con reloj que marca la vida de las ciudades, que sirven de referente, lo que nos demuestra el interés de estos organismos de perdurar con estas obras en la historia.
