New knowledge about the chuch of Santa María in Carmona

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present some of the most significant conclusions resulting from my doctoral thesis on the Church of Santa María de la Asunción in Carmona. The main aim of my thesis was to conduct a detailed study of the building and movable heritage since its foundation to the present day. The structure of the discourse is divided into four broad sections summarising the evolution of the church through the ages, beginning with a brief description of the remains dating from the mosque on which the new Gothic church was built and ending with the latest interventions carried out in the contemporary period. This paper make references throughout to specific findings regarding the architectural origins, the construction process, different phases of the works, the master builders involved, and subsequent renovations. It also analyses the building material, pillars, envelopes and decorative programmes that define the church's appearance today.

Esta comunicación tiene como objeto la presentación de algunas de las conclusiones más relevantes obtenidas al calor de la realización de mi tesis doctoral sobre la iglesia mayor de Santa María de la Asunción de Carmona. El objetivo principal giraba en torno a la elaboración de un estudio en profundidad del edificio y su patrimonio mueble desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad. En base a ello se ha estructurado el discurso en cuatro grandes bloques que resumen el devenir cronológico del templo, comenzando por una breve interpretación de los restos conservados de la primitiva mezquita previa sobre la que se alza la nueva iglesia gótica y culminando con las últimas intervenciones llevadas a cabo en la edad contemporánea. A lo largo de este texto saldrán a la luz algunos determinados resultados obtenidos en torno a sus antecedentes arquitectónicos, su proceso constructivo, fases de obras y maestros ejecutores, reformas posteriores, así como un análisis pormenorizado de la fábrica, pilares, cerramientos y programas decorativos que definen la percepción actual del templo.
