Reopen the urban question. The right to the city as an instituent practice

Abstract

The current narratives to understand the urban are in question and arises the need to explore new critical maps to read socio-spatial transformations within the geographies of capitalism. It seems that there are enough arguments in favor of a radical questioning of the existing epistemological approaches to the urban. This research aims to reopen the urban question through a discussion of the right to the city, based on the work of Henri Lefebvre and its developments in other thinkers and the contemporary urban social movements, understanding that is still new and confusing. How do we articulate the right to the city in the current context? In this first approach we are going to see a general understanding in which the right to the city is framed to study then, at a later stage of the doctoral research, its materialization in a series of concretizations of this notion within the movements.

Las narrativas actuales para entender lo urbano están en tela de juicio y surge la necesidad de explorar nuevos mapas críticos para interpretar las transformaciones socio-espaciales dentro de las geografías del capitalismo. Parece que ya existen suficientes argumentos a favor de un cuestionamiento radical de los planteamientos epistemológicos heredados con respecto a lo urbano. Esta investigación se propone reabrir la cuestión urbana mediante una discusión sobre el derecho a la ciudad, basada en el trabajo de Henri Lefebvre y sus repercusiones en otros pensadores y los movimientos sociales urbanos contemporáneos, entendiendo que es una conceptualización todavía nueva y confusa. ¿Cómo articulamos el derecho a la ciudad en el contexto actual? En este primer acercamiento vamos a tantear un entendimiento general en el que se enmarca el derecho a la ciudad para luego concretar, en una etapa más avanzada de la investigación doctoral, en una serie de materializaciones de esta noción dentro de los movimientos.
