La carrocería novohispana al final del virreinato: el pleito múltiple del gremio de la ciudad de México de 1799

Abstract

El pleito que entabló el gremio de carroceros de la ciudad de México en 1799 contra los herreros, los alquiladores de coches y los contraventores o carroceros no sometidos al gremio permite conocer la situación de la carrocería novohispana al final del virreinato. Los acuerdos alcanzados en este litigio muestran la crisis por la que pasaba el sistema gremial, los inicios de la industrialización en la creación carrocera y el paso de la influencia de la carrocería francesa, de suntuoso sentido barroco, a la definitiva primacía de la inglesa, de un marcado carácter neoclásico y un sólido fundamento técnico

The lawsuit that the coachbuilders’ union of the city of Mexico began in 1799 against the blacksmiths, the lessors of coachs and the infringers or coachbuilders not submitted to the union it allows to know the situation of the New Spanish carriage bodywork at the end of the viceroyalty. The agreements reached in this litigation demonstrates the crisis for which the trade-union system was suffering, the beginnings of the industrialization in the bodywork creation and the making from the influence of the French bodywork, which had a sumptuous baroque sense, to the definitive primacy of the English design, distinguished by its neoclassic character and solid technical basis.
