Sostenibilidad y Arquitectura. Entre la propaganda y la concienciación

Abstract

Las ideas sobre sostenibilidad en arquitectura, en los últimos tiempos, han permitido desarrollar un discurso alternativo dentro de la disciplina, no exento de confusión. Por ello, primero se aclara qué se entiende por sostenibilidad y se revisan sus fundamentos. Así se realiza un recorrido por la evolución del término, desde sus orígenes hasta la situación actual, incluyendo sus diferentes variantes (débil, fuerte, super-fuerte...). Con ello se constata que no tiene una definición inequívoca, pues ha ido adaptándose en el tiempo. Dicha indefinición ha contribuido a la manipulación de sus significado, con fines políticos y económicos, convirtiéndose en muchos casos en mera propaganda. Posteriormente se estudia la incorporación de dicho concepto en la arquitectura, que se materializa en multitud de alternativas posibles. Esta circunstancia, unida a la desinformación o la falta de formación, genera también una deformación de su significado. Asimismo se analiza la difusión del término a nivel general, y además se indican ejemplos donde éste se ha usado de manera sesgada y también adecuada. Finalmente se entiende que la educación y formación transdisciplinar del arquitecto, a través de un proceso de concienciación en términos de sostenibilidad, es clave para alcanzar a largo plazo una arquitectura verdaderamente sostenible.

The ideas about sustainability in architecture, in recent times, have allowed an alternative discourse to develop within discipline, not without some confusion. Therefore, what is understood by sustainability is first clarified and its fundamentals are revised. The evolution of the term is traced from its origins to the current situation including its different variants ( weak, strong, super-strong). It is noted that the usage of this term has been changing over time because it has no stable definition. This lack of definition has contributed to the manipulation of this meaning today, where political and economic interests prevail, becoming in many cases mere propaganda. Subsequently, in studying the inclusion of the term in architecture, which results in a variety of alternative uses, it is argued that this, together with disinformation or lack of training, also leads to a deformation of this meaning. On the other hand, the difussion of the term at a general level is analised, noting improper and also appropiate uses. Finally, this paper establishes how the transdiciplinary education and training of the architect, through awareness in terms of sustainability, are key to achieving a truly sustainable architecture in the long term.
