Descifrando la botánica en Cien años de soledad y Amor en los tiempos del cólera

Abstract

We have systematically compiled and ordered the bo- tanical references included in the Gabriel Garcia Marquez books: “A hundred years of solitude” (HYS) and “Love in the time of cholera” (LTC), in order to contribute to the knowle- dge of uses and properties of medicinal plants in a Norther region from Southern America. Besides, we want to highlight the importance of a detailed scientific reading of some lite rary masterpieces, which may improve our knowledge and vision of scientific disciplines. From a literary-biographical summary on the work of, we have revised the geography and climate from the Colombian Caribbean region in order to know the study area environmental features. Further we have thoroughly read the two books aforementioned obtaining all the plant common names that appeared in these works. Later we have identified with precision each plant common names with its corresponding scientific name. Plants have been or dered following the APG III criteria. In addition we have also considered the use of different plants cited in those texts. We have found 171 botanical references in these two examined books. They belong to 73 Angiosperms families, being Fabaceae, Poaceae, Malvaceae, Solanaceae and La- miaceae the families with higher number of species mentio- ned. In relation to the use, 22,09 % are food plants, 21,51 92% medicinal plants, 13,95 % wild plants, 12,91% aromatic plants, 11,02 % are plants to make tools, 10,46 % ornamen- tal plants and 8,13 % plants with other uses. Moreover, HYS and LTC have more plant references that in the Shakespeare or Cervantes complete works. Does not use miracle plants or plants with uncertain medicinal properties. He employs plants with bright colors or intense perfume to transport the readers into the sensual Caribbean region. In the same way he masterfully uses plants an additional resource to tell reli- gious artifices and erotic scenes

Se han recogido y ordenado de forma sistemática las referencias botánicas citadas en las novelas de Gabriel Gar- cía Márquez (GGM) Cien años de soledad (CAS) y Amor en los tiempos del cólera (ATC) . Con ello se ha elaborado una discu- sión teniendo en cuenta los usos y propiedades de las plan- tas encontradas. También se ha destacado la importancia de las humanidades en el estudio de disciplinas farmacéuticas como la botánica. Para ello se realiza una pequeña aporta- ción biográfico-literaria y se repasa la geografía y clima del Caribe Colombianos. Se lleva a cabo una atenta lectura de las novelas, y se anotan los nombres comunes de las plantas, a los que se les asigna un nombre científico. En total se han encontrado 171 referencias botánicas y 73 familias de angiospermas. Las plantas se ordenan siguien- do el criterio de APG III. Las familias con mayor número de especies nombradas son Leguminosas, Gramíneas, Malvá- ceas, Solanáceas y Labiadas. Según su utilidad el 22,09% son alimenticias, medicinales (21,51%), naturales (13,95%), con aroma (12,21%), utensilios (11,02%), jardinería (10,46%) y otros (8,13%). En CAS y ATC se cita mayor cantidad plantas que en las obras completas de Shakespeare y Cervantes. No recurre a plantas milagro, ni a plantas con propiedades me- dicinales inciertas. Las plantas con flores de colores vivos y 90 con aromas intentan trasladarnos sensorialmente el color y el olor del Caribe. Y con mucha maestría usa las plantas para contar artificios religiosos (chocolate) y pasajes eróticos en - tre otros (violetas y moco de pavo)
