The links between the Cubans who fought to end Spanish rule on the island, and the Moroccans who resisted Spanish penetration of their country have not received the attention they deserve. However, the existing literature is not without interest. A reading of the available literature could give the impression that the emerging Cuban independence movement made the anti-colonial struggle of the peoples of North Africa, including Morocco, an integral part of its own. This is the case if one reads the texts of the Cuban leader José Martí. However, this reading is very linear and does not consider the influence of European culture on the Creole media. Nor does it consider the racialization that deeply permeated the emerging discourse that articulated the idea of Cuban nationalism and in which the colored population was stigmatized. For the Cuban independence fighters, the [Moroccan] enemy of their [Spanish] enemy was not always considered a good friend. |
