Huellas adquiridas. Un mosaico interescalar entre territorio, ciudad, arquitectura y sociedad en eje Riotinto - Huelva - Punta Umbría y su influencia británica

Abstract

A mediados del siglo XIX, un número significativo de compañías extranjeras se sintió atraído por la riqueza potencial de las tierras en la provincia de Huelva. Estas empresas decidieron aprovechar esta riqueza a través de la explotación de minas a cielo abierto. Para llevar a cabo este ambicioso proyecto, instalaron asentamientos británicos en la región onubense. Sin embargo, en lugar de integrarse con los modelos urbanos y culturales ya existentes en la zona, estas poblaciones crean asentamientos ajenos y aislados tanto en temas sociales como arquitectónicos. Este hecho, hace que en un mismo espacio y periodo de tiempo coexistan dos civilizaciones completamente en paralelo. Este hecho, aunque en un primer momento fue invasivo dentro de estas poblaciones, con el tiempo, ha evolucionado hasta convertirse en un atractivo turístico significativo y un patrimonio histórico, social y cultural que ha contribuido a crear la identidad de Huelva que se conoce a día de hoy. La influencia británica ha dejado un legado en la provincia, que se ha ido manteniendo a lo largo del tiempo y ha sido un fuerte condicionante en la evolución de la sociedad y la economía en la provincia. Este trabajo realiza un recorrido desde el punto de vista más territorial hasta el más social intentando ir separando, analizando y entrelazando las diferentes capas que componen este mosaico interescalar con el fin de poder entender cómo un modelo urbano y social pasa de irrumpir de una forma radical en una población a convirtiéndose con el tiempo en un patrimonio arraigado en el lugar. Este proceso de estudio revela la complejidad de las interacciones entre diferentes culturas y cómo estas interacciones han dado forma a la identidad actual de Huelva. La preservación y comprensión de este legado resultan esenciales para apreciar la riqueza histórica y cultural de la provincia.

In the mid-19th century, a significant number of foreign companies were drawn to the potential wealth of the lands in the province of Huelva. These enterprises opted to exploit this wealth through open-pit mining. To undertake this ambitious project, they established British settlements in the Huelva region. However, instead of integrating with the existing urban and cultural models in the area, these communities created settlements that were alien and isolated both in social and architectural terms. This phenomenon resulted in the coexistence of two civilizations entirely in parallel within the same space and time frame. Although initially invasive within these populations, over time, this occurrence has evolved into a significant tourist attraction and a historical, social, and cultural heritage that has contributed to shaping the identity of Huelva as known today. The British influence has left a lasting legacy in the province, persisting over time and strongly influencing the evolution of society and the economy in the region. This work takes a journey from the most territorial perspective to the social one, attempting to separate, analyze, and interweave the different layers that compose this interscalar mosaic in order to understand how an urban and social model transitions from a radical imposition on a population to becoming ingrained heritage over time. This study process reveals the complexity of interactions between different cultures and how these interactions have shaped the current identity of Huelva. The preservation and understanding of this legacy are essential for appreciating the historical and cultural richness of the province.
