El platero Vicente Gargallo y Alexandre (1742-1808): novedades biográficas y su trabajo en la catedral de Sevilla

Abstract

En este trabajo se dan a conocer novedades tanto biográficas como artísticas del platero Vicente Gargallo y Alexandre. En primer lugar, se hace un recorrido por su trayectoria vital, que hasta el momento era totalmente desconocida. Y, seguidamente, se atiende a su faceta como platero catedralicio y a sus trabajos más relevantes, en los que comprobamos el debate existente en este periodo de transición, entre la tradición rococó practicada por el orfebre y su forzada adecuación a las novedades del Neoclasi-cismo impuestas por la élite del cabildo catedralicio.

In this paper, both biographical and artistic news of the silversmith Vicente Gar-gallo Alexandre are disclosed. In the first place, there is a tour of his vital trajectory which until now was totally unknown. And then, attention is paid to his facet as a ca-thedral silversmith and his most relevant works, in which we verify the existing debate in this period of transition, between the Rococo tradition practiced by the goldsmith and his forced adaptation to the Neoclassicism imposed by the elite of the cathedral.
