Weconducteda theoreticalstudyofelectrontransportthroughjunctionsoftheblue-copperazurinfromPseudomonasaeruginosa.Wefoundthatsingle-sitehoppingcanleadtoeitherhigherorlowercurrentvaluescomparedtofullycoherenttransport.Thisdependsonthestructuraldetailsofthejunctionsaswellasthealignmentoftheproteinorbitals.Moreover,weshowhowtheasymmetryoftheIVcurvescanbeaffectedbythepositionofthetipinthejunctionandthat,underspecificconditions,sucha hoppingmechanismisconsistentwithafairlylowtemperaturedependenceofthecurrent.Finally,weshowthatincreasingthenumberofhoppingsitesleadstohigherhoppingcurrents.Ourfindings,fromfullyquantumcalculations,providedeepinsighttohelpguidetheinterpretationofexperimentalIVcurvesonhighlycomplexsystems. |
